Funny what ya run into in a woodturning rag. The article author did an exploration and showed examples of making wood Morse tapers. Any hardwood will do.  I’ve made a few, as some of you may have done. 

 

A quick web search of Stephen A Morse, a mechanic and the inventor of the metal Morse taper in the late 1800’s I discovered this article on PubMed, dated 2013. 

In my professional work life in health care and surgery, I never associated the “Morse” taper with orthopedic surgery.   Enjoy the article, if nothin else to explore the Morse taper machine tooling to hip replacement surgery.  Some pics included  if they are sent by the server.
