[crw-talk] Honey dippers

In the interest of general knowledge….This isn’t quite right.

White Oak is also an “open grain” wood. But the pores in that open grain have some structure in them, called tyloses, that swell in an aqueous environment and inhibit liquid diffusion. As for maple, those pores are so small that they are not visible to the naked eye and thus won’t pass any liquids. Thus maple is certainly an ideal choice, with many others also being good.

Red Oak is an open grained wood and honey would absorb into the wood. White Oak or hard maple would be a better choice of wood. Both are closed grain and hard. Hard wood would provide stronger finished edges with sharp tools.

Hello Pam and every one else. The question was if glued up red oak would be good for honey dippers would be good for honey dippers. Lots of opinions shared and they show the value of our forum and the wide range of opinions of what is "right" or not "right" about a certain wood, or tool, or whatever. So Pam, I hope you got some insight and then try turning them and figure out for yourself which woods and techniques work for you.

Bottom line, that is what the club is for and enjoy your woodturning journey, John

I agree with Rich. Red oak is rather poor for delicate items. RO requires very very sharp tools to cut the dipper grooves. Poplar or even maple would be a better choice. -raasch

That looks like red oak. Not my favorite wood to turn, but I think it would be OK for your honey dippers.

Can two boards be glued together to turn honey dippers? I came across lots of these oak cut offs.
