Thanks, Ken, for the very kind response.

As always, there is more than meets the eye. The explanation is very helpful. Maybe Hostgator chooses not to update for monetary reasons, beyond our control ta be sure.

I no nada bout Unix, Linux or other. I started with MS DOS 1.0? on a PC, very early eighties. Don’t even know how to turn a Apple or Mac system on- I just eat em.
Sometimes, the command prompt systems made more sense. Does RedHat have a GUI interface? I know most medical imaging equipment run on Unix, lower overhead much faster at processing those electrons I suspect.

Now that I’m forced to use gmail on my phone, as the shitty charter interface on my phone usually craps out, I’m often using both charter(PC) and gmail (phone)for email purposes, in my view, a waste of time…When I retire, I’ll get off the bandwagon and stick to bagpiping ( I like that irritating sound to some or most- Red Hot Chilli Pipers much more fun than rap, ska and the like) and turning stuff.

Anyway, I’ll take a peek at the Mailman interface, not making any changes. That’s probably got lots of geeky stuff, ma mostly gone brain wouldn’t understand anyway. That would be suicide!

I may have some questions offline…ifn I see something that really sticks out, don’t hold your breath on me finding any. There may be a member in the club that’s getting into Unix or Linux and would love to help ya. That 1 will read this….me thinks.

When I got in trouble, long time ago with mailserver stuff, 1995ish, the IT people pulled me from the brink….can you imagine 1000 subscribers screamin at me? Was an unpleasant thingy, went with the job.

Thanks again Ken and take care.

Hey, una mas, are you in the founding member group of the CRW?

-raasch

Bob, and all, my replies are interspersed within the quotes:

The following is geeky: read at you own risk.

1.	The currently used club’s CRW talk software is Mailman software is 2.1.38, the most current is 3.3.8, written in the Python language, which should be stable. I do not know the effect of the current Mailman version on handling the current email traffic. I believe the computer running the OS maybe a type of Unix, Linux or similar and able to be used on a variety of computers....... Am hoping Ken will review and possibly update, as needed. There are mail server products available that run on Windows computers, but these are not free!

the website is hosted on a shared hosting server from hostgator.com. It is a Linux system, running Redhat Linux. I don't have root access to the server at the level where Mailman can be updated. Hostgator offers the Mailman listserv as a user service, and they take care of the updates. All I can do is log into the control panel and change the settings to suit our needs.

2.	Many years ago, ........ I do not know if Yahoo groups is still available or costs. It was free in the mid 2000’s
3.	Someone suggested in the last couple of days, for members to use an email package other than AOL when interacting with CRW talk. ......... I don’t believe the CRW police should be involved in recommending email software to use. .....

4.	Please, fix or update the CRW software as needed, Do not suggest using a new email address for this sole purpose.

I certainly didn't mean to police the choice of email providers, just wanted to suggest a solution to the problem. The fix/update request is answered in my first paragraph.

5.	I do suspect, however, paying for an email list management service would be a consideration going forward, set up so more than one club member person could help manage. Some of these have reasonable costs for such a small club and minimal traffic such as CRW has. Funded by dues, recall the kitty currently has bout $3,000 I believe.

Hostgator doesn't offer alternatives as a service, although there are user-installable packages available for email listservs. I have looked at them in the past, and didn't see any reason to move away from Mailman. Why fix something that isn't broken? I'm not sure where the connection lies between Mailman and outgoing emails getting trapped in personal spam folders.

Bob, I'd be glad to have your help managing crw-talk or you can at least have a look at the Mailman control panel. I'll email you the login info for that. Maybe you can find that connection.

6.

Thank you, -Raasch

Bob, it must have been eaten by a gremlin. One that munches down on electrons, kind of like a Pac Man. Just resend it, As I enter my ninth decade, if there is one thing I have figured out, it is electronic devices are subject to glitches. John

I think it is always wise for club members to help maintain safe meetings. The excitement of live demonstrations, along with Co-Vid complacency and rusty remembering, shouldn't numb us to safety recommendations.

Perhaps a demonstration checklist of av, equipment and seating set up would help with memory cobwebs.

I am impressed that this club has the trust and respect of all members so concerns are able to be presented without retribution.

Kudos to the club as a whole. Pam
