John

Thank you and the rest of your team for bringing Lyle J. to our club. He done an outstanding job.

As Bob mentioned he is known for promoting his tools to much. However he did not do that in our session. I thought he was outstanding.

What is his and Mike Peace’s web page?

Thanks Bob, and the entire board played a part in bringing this to the club. I too was impressed with the demo, and Bob's perspective as a retired educator makes his points particularly well taken. He said that better then I could have.

And yes, Mike Peace will join us in May for another virtual event. He is an excellent teacher as well. I will say that several years ago I gave a demo on making Mike Peace's one piece (had to be careful to get the Peace and piece in their proper order) coffee scoop which was featured in the American Woodturner.

My mission as Program Director during the pandemic has been to bring the same quality events to the club membership even though we can't meet in person. John

Hello fellow turners. The Sat club's IRD was truly a wonderful opportunity.

To be honest, I thought the topic was going to be deep hollowing, which it wasn't, so was planning only watch a wee bit. However, while his technique is applied to his shallow hollow form as well as a deeper form, it is universal. I watched with enthusiasm till the very end.

I was impressed with Lyle's skill in turning, use of tools & video-sound as well a patient teacher. He was very deliberate in all stages of the process, from planning the project to turning. He answered questions posed. Lyle did not rush any part of the demo. IMHO, he is truly a skilled performer.

I've participated in numerous IRD's, mostly thru the AAW, Lyle's right up there with best. The IRD, if done properly with the appropriate technology is as good or possibly better than bringing someone to the clubhouse. And, ya can stay in your jammies if desired!

As with most performers, they tout the stuff they sell and he was no different. I do appreciate his advice on equipment simplicity. His use of a laser for hollowing appeared to be straight forward & simple, without the use of a computer, monitor, etc.

That has some appeal to me. Check out his website for info. Lyle's stressing the use of faceplate for safety & simplicity struck a note for me. His demo using it made it look so easy and using it would reduce costs, especially for a new turner starting out. Will I give up using my multiple 4 jaw chucks? Prob not! But, I will try to be more judicious in their use. I've had the experience of most; that flying projectile coming hell-bent for me outta that chuck, seemingly without warning! Yup, after you've changed underwear, then analyze the event, you can usually see the cause(s).

Member participation was extremely small, 20-22? I'm sure the Jamieson demo was not of low cost. So, it is too bad we didn't have better turnout. I appreciate that John Griffiths & Jim Bloomer did a good job in promoting this jewel.

Maybe we as membership can be more proactive in promoting upcoming IRD's within ourselves to take advantage of these opportunities. I think a Mike Peace IRD is coming this spring/summer. If ya don't know bout his work, check his YouTube site, Mike Peace Woodturning to whet your appetite.

As usual from me, enough already!

Keep turning my friends & Be Well!
