[crw-talk] Shocking End To Bandsaw Wood Preparation

I saw that notice as well. Doesn’t apply to my Inca – it’s completely properly enclosed.

In thinking about this some more, there are some potential issues that aren’t obvious.
*	Blade Size – this could be worse if you are using a big, wide resawing blade and run it with the gullets off the front of the wheel.
*	Setup – some machines are finicky as to the co-planarity [or lack of same] of the blades. In his books, Mark Duginske expounds on this at length. It’s possible that setup error could move the locus of blade travel towards the operator to where fingers can be endangered on machines with open blade slots.
*	Damage – If the wheel shaft is mislocated [due to running with excessive blade tension], the blade band can also be too far towards the operator.

Tape over that slot is OK, temporarily. I’d go with something a little more substantial. Former member of CRW Dave Dapkus did this with the Grizzly he had, using his sheet metal skills.

Whoa! Kris, thanks so much for this. My Grizzly now has a strip of duct tape over the channel. I discovered I could barely reach the blade edge (stopped of course) with my ring finger poked in the slot. The blade is about 5/8" in from the outside edge and the slot is only about 7/16" or so wide, but I never thought of that hazard.

Hi everyone,

I received these emails for as wood turns every week. This particular one starts out with band saw safety. It especially focuses on an area that many of us don't think about. The area on the left side of the table where the blade comes up from the underside of the table. I was surprised that this was a Jet bandsaw that had a wide open channel. I have a craftsman and will have to go check out mine.

Stay safe,

Kris
