Thanks James, I just want to have a meeting.  You are the President, your call and the board's on which platform and when.  I do plan to attend the AAW one the afternoon of the 21st featuring John Jordan.  I personally do not deer hunt so the 21st works for me.

My two cents worth:  I have never tried Microsoft Teams, never even heard of it till now.  I can get Zoom to work, mostly.  I tried a remote medical appointment with my Dr. last month on Skype Business, I could not make it work at all.  An idea, maybe have a practice run.

So what I envision is you determining the best platform then doing one or maybe two practice sessions where members can join the meeting for a few minutes to get the kinks worked out then leave, and others can use it too.   And if you are moderating, have your phone number available so you can act as the help desk for those who are finding it too tricky during the practice session.  That way, a better chance of success with the actual virtual meeting for us old goats who are not tech savvy.

Anyway, I am ready to rock and roll!  Thanks for your leadership, John

I am open to either Zoom or Microsoft Teams, It is similar to Zoom. Free version can host a 45 min meeting and can work with either a PC/laptop with cam or a mobile device. The 21st of this month would be when our traditional meeting would take place. An electronic in its place would work.

So, board members, what do you think?  I am ready and willing to take the step.  This Saturday?  The Saturday after is WI deer season, And AAW will be doing a John Jordan on line event that day too, which I don't plan to miss.  Then Thanksgiving weekend?  Do we wait until December?  An evening meeting some weeknight?  I think if we plan for an hour or so, with a definite agenda.  Then after we get that experience under our belts, go on to a longer format like Lyle Solem said.  Instant gallery, discussions.  Maybe a lecture if not a demo.   We will need a member to set up and moderate the meeting.  And a Zoom event can be attended with a smart phone, a tablet, a laptop or a desktop computer with a camera/microphone.  (I bought my camera and microphone from Target on-line.  Best Buy, Amazon, Walmart and e Bay are among the many places one can be had for about $30.00  It sits on top of my monitor.)

And other CRW members, please chime in, let us know your thoughts.  Think about the movie about a baseball park some guy built in his field in Iowa, "If you build it, they will come..."  And by George, they did.

Bob Raasch, thanks much for your thoughts.  I would be willing to do sort of an "open library, open tool" event at the Center now and again.  I am pretty certain that could be done in a way that meets CDC guidelines.  My take would be to not have coffee available (Fine to BYOC), masks mandatory, a bottle of sanitizer available in plain sight and no one hang around for long so our faithful librarians will not be subjected to prolonged exposure, distancing practiced to the extent possible.  We might want to stand outside distanced and chat too.  I would make my 95 mile round trip now and then for that.

Virginia, as our librarian and practicing Nurse Practioner, is this a viable option for us?  Would you add something

Back to Bob's comments, he also suggested a Zoom meeting and for us to have a pretty defined agenda that is followed so as to maintain interest.  Much harder for most of us to focus on a screen where someone is speaking as opposed to our usual meeting style.  Board members, an idea:  Maybe do a business meeting to submit a formal motion to carry over dues for paid up members to 2021.  Also do an election of officers, even it it is to carry over the current board to next year.  Perhaps we should try to stay fairly close to the by-laws in these times even if 100% compliance is not practical nor safe.  Such a Zoom business meeting should also include an instant gallery.  We would need someone with enough Zoom awareness to run or moderate the meeting.  Volunteers?

Lastly let's figure out a Zoom Demo project to do.  Maybe start with something pretty simple like turning a pen.  Or a bowl. Or some other spindle project.  How to do that safely you ask.  Well, If I were to journey to Bob's shop to broadcast him making a project for example, that would expose both of us and wearing a mask makes speaking clearly difficult.  But many of us have a spouse or family member with whom we live so maybe that person could be persuaded to do the camera work.  Any volunteers.  (My little secret, if this happens, you get to pick the topic if you volunteer.)

OK, I have exhausted my wellspring of ideas for the moment so will sign off.  But, please add your thoughts, ideas and when some thoughts are firmed up, I think the board will take the next step to make something happen.  Until then, peace and health,

Hi! Jim and John,  I would recommend that we just renew  all members without new dues for 2021, we have 4700 $ in the Bank and this , would hopefully hold our membership.  Also, if we would happen to need more money to get us throught, 2021, we could just do a $15 fee ,to each member to get us into 2022!  I think we need a 1 hr zoom meeting each month bye 3 members to conduct any business and show off some good works!  This would have to be done at someones house with WiF ??  J.

Good Saturday morning members,
I want to suggest we have some sort of an on-line gathering.  It would be up to the board what we do, but several possibilities exist.  The best possibility would seem to me to be Zoom.  A moderator would control the meeting, giving members a chance to speak and keeping the discussion going as would the president in a face to face meeting.  James, if you are comfortable with managing a Zoom meeting you would be a natural as president.

Club dues are due and a decision needs to be made: do we just renew everyone without paying dues since we did not spend 2020 dues for anything other than basic club functions or what?  Also we should make a decision about club officers.  Just reappoint the existing board or what?

One would be a simple meeting via Zoom, but there might be a boredom factor with that.   Perhaps a short business meeting would be tolerable and useful.  We could incorporate an instant gallery in this too.  This would be a matter of holding the piece we are presenting in the instant gallery up to the camera on the computer, phone or tablet you are using while discussing your design, finish and so on.

Another would be to do some kind of a demo in a Zoom meeting.  This might involve one of us setting up a camera, perhaps on a phone and placing it in view of the workpiece so it would transmit the actual turning and the your narrative.  The person running the Zoom meeting would control the image being transmitted and  handle questions.  Or we could have another person present at the lathe handling the camera while the turner turns.  That might be best.

So if you have read this far (I hope you have) you will notice I have not made any decisions or directives.  That is way above my pay grade, to quote a former president.  This is the time for members to speak up with feedback, ideas what you want as a club member and how to keep the club going during these trying times.  Please think about this and circulate your thoughts as replies.

This will give direction to the board about the future of the club.  I do not want to see it fade into nothingness so I hoped we can do some kind of on-line meeting.
