[crw-talk] CRW on-line activity

Good evening John and All,

A very thought provoking and timely message to be sure. As members, we all have some responsibility, if we desire to have CRW continue to exist. Dormancy leads to withering. Many clubs are healthy, some are not, I suspect.

The AAW rag has good ideas and celebrates clubs achievements by posting short narratives and sometimes pics of accomplishments. Take a peek.

Zoom is a mechanism to share, accomplish business and celebrate, even if a little awkward. Works best with smaller participant numbers, at least with the free version.

I suspect the delightful AAW live demo vids have lots of support behind the scenes, understandable.

A well defined agenda is required to keep a zoom meeting going, possibly run like a real live meeting, sans donuts! Coffee essential!

I like the idea of zoom sharing our work/art/projects/tooling review, etc. Admittedly, I have done virtually nada since April.

I’m not opposed to paying dues for 2021, IF…..

What if?... well, maybe have a Sat once a month onsite available for open library? Limited checkout, using CDC COVID safety guidelines? Same with tool checkout?

What if?....develop some type of common goal for club membership to work on….some clubs make Beads of Courage boxes for pediatric units at local hospitals….last time I checked, both local facilities don’t participate in the “beads” program…..but that was several years ago. I’m sure there may be others….we used to submit bowls for NASA.

I do like John’s idea of a demo using a helper to manage the camera/phone/video…..worth a try. Of course using Covid safe guidelines once the numbers come down….best advice for now to stay home,

OR, maybe a group/club buy for national demonstrator, more pros are doing this now, with good fidelity of video/audio and expertise.

Or, maybe CRW membership viewing an AAW demonstrator ($10 for AAW members). AAW has approx. monthly presentations. This would be conducted on their home computer systems. We could have a with a local zoom meeting directly after to chat/ critique / share ideas on what was presented.

My 2 cents worth, for I’m only about 80% water!

Thank you John so starting this timely thread.

Subject: [crw-talk] CRW on-line activity

Good Saturday morning members,

I want to suggest we have some sort of an on-line gathering. It would be up to the board what we do, but several possibilities exist. The best possibility would seem to me to be Zoom. A moderator would control the meeting, giving members a chance to speak and keeping the discussion going as would the president in a face to face meeting. James, if you are comfortable with managing a Zoom meeting you would be a natural as president.

Club dues are due and a decision needs to be made: do we just renew everyone without paying dues since we did not spend 2020 dues for anything other than basic club functions or what? Also we should make a decision about club officers. Just reappoint the existing board or what?

One would be a simple meeting via Zoom, but there might be a boredom factor with that. Perhaps a short business meeting would be tolerable and useful. We could incorporate an instant gallery in this too. This would be a matter of holding the piece we are presenting in the instant gallery up to the camera on the computer, phone or tablet you are using while discussing your design, finish and so on.

Another would be to do some kind of a demo in a Zoom meeting. This might involve one of us setting up a camera, perhaps on a phone and placing it in view of the workpiece so it would transmit the actual turning and the your narrative. The person running the Zoom meeting would control the image being transmitted and handle questions. Or we could have another person present at the lathe handling the camera while the turner turns. That might be best.

So if you have read this far (I hope you have) you will notice I have not made any decisions or directives. That is way above my pay grade, to quote a former president. This is the time for members to speak up with feedback, ideas what you want as a club member and how to keep the club going during these trying times. Please think about this and circulate your thoughts as replies.

This will give direction to the board about the future of the club. I do not want to see it fade into nothingness so I hoped we can do some kind of on-line meeting.

John
