Jim,

Jennifer and I wet sand the turned blanks with micro pads that begin at 1,500 grit and end with a grit of 12,000 (Yes, twelve thousand is not a typo error.). You must keep these pads wet to avoid melting the plastic blanks and ruining the pads. We then use one of the plastic polishes to complete the process. There is no need to apply a finish as when using wood. The acrylic blanks, as well as the blanks Phil Miller makes polish to a very high gloss and are quite durable. However, the acrylic blanks are much more brittle and require extra care to avoid chipping when drilling the center hole and when turning near the ends of the blank. Phil’s blanks turn more like soft maple. If you have questions, give us a call at 507-895-6853 or come visit us at our home in La Crescent Township, a sub-neighborhood of the metropolis of La Crescent, Minnesota.

By the way, both the sanding pads and the polish are available at A Line Machine Tools in La Crosse or online from Penn State Industries, Woodcraft, Craft Supply, and others.

Dear Friends,

I bought a couple pen blanks and am about ready to turn them, and I have no idea what to do to finish them. I know what to do with wood, but what do you apply, if anything, to these plastic ones????

Thanks,
