Yes, owns can be laser engraved.  However, there are things to consider.
The size, length and diameter of the barrel determines what you can put on it.
Color of the material.  The engraving stands out better on some colors vs others. 
Type of material it is made out of.  Vinyl is toxic to laser engrave with a CO2 laser.  
There will be some debris in the engraving. 
Are you going to fill in the engraving with a contrasting color?  Will the pen need to be remounted? 
The engraving will be different depths due to the curves of the pen.
Each line has to have the pen manually rotated on most lasers.
Several years ago, Phil Miller and I went to distribute the pens.  We went to the actual return of the veterans, but they were tor3d after a long day.  We decided not to give the pens out then.  There was a reception a few weeks later that we went to and had a table with them set out.  Each veteran then was able to pick out a pen.  We enjoyed talking to them and heard some cool stories.
