I represent Coulee Region Woodturners and currently serve as club President. Our group makes turned objects, mostly out of wood. We have donated turned writing pens to groups affiliated with Luther High School on several occasions. I?ve attached a copies of our most recent newsletter and photo album to give you an idea of who we are and what we do. ? We are investigating the possibility of a pen donation to all the Veterans who are on the Freedom Honor Flights. This would involve the purchase of the necessary hardware kits, obtaining the wood for the barrel blanks, and then the turning and subsequent finishing and assembly of each pen. ? Our group would like to have a sponsor that would cover the out-of-pocket costs and our club would supply all the labor involved. I?ve included this link to help give you an idea of what is available and the cost range. As you can see, the kits alone for one flight [usually ~100 passengers] would be approximately $2000. ? It may be that we put together a proposal for what we would like to do and cost estimates, then approach different groups like Kwik Trip, Legion, VFW and whomever we come up with and see if they will sponsor a part of the pen project.? Craft Supplies has donated to us for a pen project.in the past. Back when Clyde Cassell was president, the club was gifted a huge number, maybe several hundred pairs, of drilled pen blanks (they were cut and drilled for Slimline kits) and we came up with a project to donate pens to Habitat for Humanity.? That was when PSI and Craft Supplies were selling Slimline kits for under $2.00 each.? Clyde first spoke with PSI, they would not give or discount Slimline kits even for projects like ours.? So Clyde went to Craft Supplies, and they were agreeable to work with us.? I do not recall exactly but I recall they donated a large number of kits. Then the club handed out blanks and kits to interested members. When complete, Habitat for Humanity honored their staff by giving them the pens we made. What I think will be important if we use donated materials and member labor to make them, we print out some business card sized cards that list the organizations that donated on one side, and some other info; and the maker and type of kit and wood species on the other.? We can have a line for the maker to write their name and another line for the wood species.? And make sure CRW is prominently mentioned of course. Most of us have a lot of wood laying around collecting dust that can be cut and processed into blanks.? Or we can also use acrylic blanks if someone has some they wish to donate as well.? Maybe a Saturday club project for us or maybe members take materials home and do them.? Whatever works. John On 3/1/24 12:23 PM, Kristine Clough wrote: > Yes, owns can be laser engraved.? I'm no longer the one who does the programs, but Pam has put together an interesting one involving pepper mills.? We have not had a pepper mill demo in a coon's age, the only one one I remember was Rich Egan doing one back before the surface of the Earth had cooled, maybe 2010 or 2011 or so.? Be sure to catch it. And while getting ready to attend, be sure to round up and bring a few pieces to put in the exhibition at the Old Main Gallery. They can be priced for sale, or marked not for sale.? Have your name on the pieces so they can be kept track of.? An inventory list is needed too so we get the tight things back to the right owner/maker after the exhibition ends.? The exhibition goes up March 30 and is on display during events at Old Main in Galesville during April and May.? If you have items on display you get free admission for concerts etc during that time.? Concert goers enjoy the exhibitions during intermissions and if a piece sells, all the money goes to the maker.? No tax or commissions are taken out. See you Saturday and be sure to bring some items for the exhibition. Most markers are permanent and will take a finish. Watercolor markers are a thing but they will be effected by water, I don't know how well they work on wood that is to be used, they will possibly run with water soluble or alcohol based finishes. Acrylic craft paint is opaque, won't let the grain show through. Color pencils are nice at times, just ask Duane, our club expert on them; but they can run with wipe-on if you scrub it on.? I have used color pencils in conjunction with wood burned birds on vases, nice outcome.? Or could it be incorporated into Aaron's demonstrating at A Line?? If we wold ever get ourselves into a pen making project it would certainly work too. Most high schools have evening activities (mainly games) on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday nights.? Wednesday in the public schools are not scheduled so students can go to religious training.?
