The other to consider is the start capacitor on your motor. If it has one, it will be that added lump on the outside of your motor. These are electrolytic caps and dry out over time. If you jumper wires around switch and it starts when you plug it in then switch is bad.

I have a jet bandsaw.   When I push the on button nothing happens, I push it off and on a couple times and it will come on.   Do I need to clean out behind on off switch?
