There could be excessive foreign material in there, or a worn contact, or a loose wire. It might even be the wire ends outside of that box ? but less likely. I had to replace mine at some point. The other to consider is the start capacitor on your motor. If it has one, it will be that added lump on the outside of your motor. These are electrolytic caps and dry out over time. If you jumper wires around switch and it starts when you plug it in then switch is bad.
