Taylor, the cancer center coordinator said, "the patients love them". My fellow turners, please continue making them, know that the fruits of your labor do make a difference. As an aside benefit, those recipients know these stands are made by members of the local wood turning club, Coulee Region Woodturners. I believe, but cannot guarantee that as of now, 187 stands have been collected and sent to local healthcare facilities, it may be more. I did not collect the stands from the Oct meeting. Thanks to everyone who had made them.? Denis Falch is our wig stand champion, he has made a bunch of them, around a hundred if memory serves..? And Denis' brother Doug does the finishing of them.? Bob Raasch deserves a huge shout out for his tireless coordinating of this project with Gundersen.? Thanks to all of you who tolerated my nagging and bugging to keep making them.? Please keep it up after I am no longer Program Director. I made a wig stand for a neighbor who was receiving treatment in Eau Claire, she was very grateful for it.? Luckily for her, her cancer is now gone but the first episode of chemo was horrible for her.? The remaining five treatments were not horrible, just awful, and I like to think that getting that wig stand after the first treatment helped her to decide to go on with it.? Things like this remind us that our club is making an important contribution which is a part of our reason for existence.? Service is good for us, as well as for others. Our esteemed tech guy, founding member and all around most useful member (a title I have bestowed) Duane Hill has volunteered to do a demo on shear scraping.? This will be another of Duane's great demos.? And even if you have been turning for years, you will come away with new insights. I believe this is a very fitting topic as it follows Jay Johnson's pen demo from October in which he used a scraper for pen making from start to finish.? An excellent way to teach pen making.? In my shop at least, the scraper is an overlooked tool even though I have several varieties and routinely shear scrape bowls. So attend this coming Saturday and we will continue the scraper theme. And be sure to personally thank Duane for stepping up. What do you think. Thoughts on membership I think that two guest meetings then membership should be expected. I also believe that at the time of joining the dues amount are prorated for the next number of months left in that calendar year. IE: join in March pay dues equal to 10 months. I think gift, sponsored or scholarship memberships should be available as options. I know many clubs that membership requires a number of volunteer hours contributed per year. I would like to talk about this idea for next year. Hours could be demonstrating, setting up av, writing for the newsletter, being an official visitor to another club, community outreach or other club activities. I think members have a responsibility to the club to actively participate for the betterment and growth of the club. Duane performed a very well-done demo on the use of the "shear scraping" technique on bowls, to which I might add can be used on a variety of curved surfaces. Lots of good questions and comments came from the audience during the meeting. The tidbits learned are very useable. As he mentioned, its use allows the turner start sanding with a much finer grit and removes subtle imperfections in the formation of those surfaces. For me, maybe with correct shear scraping technique, I can stop using 80 grit sandpaper as the starting grit! Thanks again Duane. The member turnout was much smaller than we had hoped, maybe the Dec meeting will bring 'em back! -raasch -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
