White Oak is also an ?open grain? wood. But the pores in that open grain have some structure in them, called tyloses, that swell in an aqueous environment and inhibit liquid diffusion. As for maple, those pores are so small that they are not visible to the naked eye and thus won?t pass any liquids. Thus maple is certainly an ideal choice, with many others also being good. I know there is some controversy as to the value of the non-profit and if it is worth the time and cost. I would like to express my views. There is no benefit in keeping the non-profit alive if you are not going to take any benefits from having it. We lost the non-profit due to no one filling out an IRS electronic form (at no cost) that asked a single question. The question was: Did you collect over $50,000 in donations last year? Missing that form for three straight years put us back to the start. I saw the benefit in having the 501(c)3 status not in getting personal tax deductions but in grants and reduced cost fees. The 501(c)3 is not a sales exempt document but it would have reduced our rent at the community center to $45 a month. It would give us access to the Onalaska Library meeting rooms with internet access for free. These are some small benefits. We could have applied for grants for some of the major items on our wish list. There is a plan to upgrade our audio and video systems. There is talk about upgrading our Web Page to name two. As a 501(c)3 non-profit organization we could have gone to various sources to apply for these grants. The La Crosse Community foundation comes to mind. There are several categories and client grants that they have that would fit this need. I am no longer a member of this group so I have no vote in the results, but these reasons may cause you to reconsider. Please, if you discuss do it among yourselves. Hopefully this is the last thing I will say about it. If yo want my thought it is ? A good thing if you use it, a not necessary thing and big waste of time and energy if you do not. If you care to read them, go for it. The format I sent it in should open in everyones computer or device. (I use open source software when possible and thanks to Bob Raasch for telling me how to make it both send and open.) James will also post on the club FaceBook page a set of instructions that someone sent around to the club a few months ago. The thing not on the notes is my list of sources of information. I used Yahoo search to find some wig stand videos. (Normal people can also use Google to search the topic.) There is also lots of written information as well. An outstanding source for anyone is the AAW, and a subgroup of AAW is the WIT or Women In Turning. Kind of a witty bunch of folks there. So please keep those wig stands coming to meetings. And once again, special thanks to Denis and Doug Falch for their wonderful contribution. John -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... So put your thinking caps on and ponder the topic. The 2x4 can be a regular construction grade 2x4 four feet long. Or an actual full 2" by 4" rough sawn plank four feet long. Hardwood. Softwood. Whatever suits your fancy. We have not done this for a while. I think it was last done when I was recovering from a knee replacement because I don't recall anything about what people brought in. Our oracle Raasch has a unique way of putting the words down, and I quote: "Cutr up, reglue, cutr up again, turn a little, cutr up, reglue, turn more, cutr up again, turn more, hollow a bit, put some 14 ga copper wire on it, cutr up, reglue, oh, just have fun." So basically, them's the rules. Cut, glue, rethink it until you have something uniquely yours. Heck if you buy an 8' 2x4, don't like the result of the first half, start over with the second half. Just get the creative side of your brain going and turn it loose to see what emerges. Perhaps just a different twist on something you have made before. You are the expert here, just be careful with all the sawing you might be doing. I have a plan for my contribution but am not saying it here. Awaiting the challenge results, John. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Members, I just got the 4th coat of wipe on-poly on one of the stands I worked on during my demo, my plan is to donate it tomorrow to a neighbor lady who is receiving her cancer care in Eau Claire. Hoping to see a bunch of stands of all designs and makers at the next meeting. They will be finding a new, temporary home this week at Gundersen?s Cancer Center. Rest assured every club member, those lovingly made stands are cherished by those receiving them. To all club members, we all had the opportunity to see a ?stand? being made by our featured demonstrator turner, John Griffiths. John presented the steps involved in a way that we can all feel comfortable making at our home shops. Nice Job on that show, John. The cache breakdown is: LaVonne-2, Rich Egan-5, Denis and Doug Falch-13, Done Morovits-3, JJ-1, no signature-3. Thus far, 153 stands have been made since December 2021. Thank you to all have participated in the process. With free wood to make stands so generously contributed by a club member, it?s a win win.
