[crw-talk] Top blank size?

Ifn blanks are cut for turning on site at the fair, then 1 piece tops are mucho easier & faster to make. 7" length would allow for chucking. To keep any potential audience attention, production speed is relevant.

An alternative could be as for what Al Lacer shows. Simply turn the blank between centers, a M2 taper on one end, then slam that baby into the headstock stock end. If the M2 is cut appropriately, it's a slam dunk. Lacer contends this does not harm the spindle. Not sure I agree with that assessment, however.

This method negates the need for a chuck. I'm assuming the lathes on site will have M2 spindle.

Ma 2 cents worth at best.

I DO HAVE SOME STRAIT GRAIN MAPLE FROM THE AMISH THAT I SPOKE OF. IT IS A FULL 2' THICK AND I RIP THE PLANKS TO A SQUARE 2'. THEN I CUT THEM ALL AT 4' LONG. THIS IS ENOUGH TO MAKE ANY TOPS THAT I MAKE, LIKE THE GOBE AND PEDISTAL, AND IT WILL MAKE TWO OF THE REGULAR TOPS, PLUS WITH THE LEFT OVER, I MAKE ONE CRADDLE ( I CALL IT ).

THE BOYS AT THE YARD CHARGED ME $7.75 A FOOT WHICH IS DOUBBLE WHAT THEY HAD BEEN CHARGING. THE REASON THAT I EXPLAIN ALL THIS IS THAT I HAVE THE MATERIAL AND AM WILLING TO CUT THEM ALL TO SIZE, BUT I DO HAVE ABOUT $1.25 PLUS MATERIAL EACH ONE. IT IS NICE STRAIT GRAIN MAPLE. I WILL BRING A BUNCH TO THE NEXT MEET IF ANY BODY WANTS SOME AT $1.50 EACH, THEY WILL BE AVAILABLE. IF NOT, ISTILL HAVE A MARKET FOR MY TOPS SO NO LOSS IN CUTTING THEM TO SIZE.

Depends entirely on the design. And whether it’s two pieces ala Ken Garden or one piece.

And then there are all the Wendell Ziegler options.

Afternoon,. I am cutting some blanks for turning the tops for Earth Fair. Should I cut them 6 inches to get 3 tops out of a blank or 7 inches or something else. Thanks
