He was an extraordinary turner & artisan. Some of the old timers in the club may remember John's 2 day demonstration at the Gautch residence in Onalsaska, 2008 or 2009. That was my first club meeting, I think. All of us attendees were impressed by his skill, use of color, form and folksy way. Even purchased some his hollowing tools at that meeting. He was a master especially at green wood turning, mainly noted for hollow forms in which did carving on. I've met him a few times since then at conferences and found him be friendly and helpful. His signature of selling his tools over years was that he ?only sells the tools he uses?. Another stalwart of the community no longer with us. He will be missed. Thank you. His visit to our club was before my time. I attended a demo of his at the Badger Woodturners near Madison 8-10 years ago and left some money behind for some of his tools as well. He was indeed a master. He could get the inside of a hollow form quite smooth with his cutters which are basically 3/16? HSS scrapers. If you have ever stuck a finger inside my hollow forms, the difference was noticeable, which attests to his mastery. At times I considered trying to track him down for a demo, but that is now history. Our club places an emphasis on community engagement and here are chances to participate. One is wig stands. If possible please make one or a couple, or even a few up. One that has been made is an offset turned one, come to the meeting to check it out. I would send a photo of it, but my computer seems to have eaten the picture. (My computer are it, I don?t have a dog.) Another thing we?ll be needing is tops. Lots and lots of tops, for the end of April at the Earth Day event where we will be demonstrating woodturning, chatting with people passing by and?guess what, giving away tops. Lastly, Luther is having a fund raiser in the next few weeks and they asked if we could donate pieces for their auction. So if you choose, you could consider a donation of a turning. Bring it to the next meeting. A chance for us to use some of the equipment and make chips. If a student is present we will still help them as well. In order to cover both the school and the club I have arranged a train the trainer night Mon Apr 3. I will be there and would like to see a few of us there to learn proper operation and safety for the shop's equipment. We would then act as trainers for the open shop night to help the members that might be unsure or unfamiliar with use of some pieces of equipment. Plan on starting at about 1530(330 pm) Approximately an hour to go through everything. If you want to come but would be a little later...let me know In Service -- James A.
