In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: As Fareed would say?.Here?s my take. The wheels look like a really good design. Incorporating the side as well as the perimeter is a major step forward ? it adds a lot of versatility. Then that stand and tool rest arrangement is much the same. You?ll find that having the pivot axis at the tangent to the wheel is really useful. Fixturing for going to the back and the side ? very helpful. I?ve cobbled with that myself on my grinder. Having a jig system for sharpening gouges is IMNSHO unnecessary. I, along with many others, sharpen without them. It?s a learnable skill and saves 80+% of the time needed to sharpen. That delay due to tedious setup disincentivizes the turner towards continuing to use a dull tool so that bad habits are reinforced because of the white-knuckle grips needed to force the tool to cut. Perhaps this last comment will be part of my demo that?s scheduled. Of course, I can show anyone in a few seconds, but the nuances are subtle enough that they need some over-the-shoulder reinforcement when first trying to learn it. And giving away tops. Pam Day, our organizer wants lots of tops to give away to families to generate interest. So I have decided to organize a Top Challenge for the March meeting. So please make and donate tops to the club. Bring some in for the March meeting and we will have a spin off. Spin your top on a porcelain or china plate (on a table top) for a minimum of friction, a long spin time and no need to get down on the floor. Then donate them to the club. And an engineering hint even though I'm no engineer, make the handle of the top nice and skinny so it gets maximum RPMs when you give it a spin. If someone is really competitive, they can keep track of the spin times to see if we have a winner. Anyway, more then one way to turn a top, pun intended. Use whatever design you want. Decorate them. Club old timers will remember Wendell Ziegler's use of markers to decorate as he turned them. So go for it. Easy Peasy and lots of fun. See you in about three weeks, John -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL:
