Thanks Denis. Some will recall that Marv brought in some catalpa blanks to the March meeting. The piece I got was very wet, so I let it dry in a bag until this week then made the top and base of a wig stand from it, with a spalted birch stem. The wood was still wet, but I turned the parts, and they finished piece is interesting. The coloration is not dramatic in my opinion, but it has very "contrasty" grain and is a medium brown. The wood is pretty soft and hard to get the end grain cut down nicely due to an apparent tendency to tear out. Of coarse, knowing myself as well as I do,maybe to gouge was not optimally sharp. Just sayin'... An attempt to smooth with a negative rake scraper made it worse. But with a lot of sanding and several coats of poly, it turned out well. So thank you Marv. We will be relocating the club to Luther High school. I have already been in contact with Mr. Larsen at Luther and will be working with the school and the membership to organize and move our assets to Luther and set up storage. We will have our regular meeting at the community center in June which will be outside due to Aaron demonstrating tool making tools. The July meeting will be planned for the move. I delivered 18 wig stands yesterday. Taylor thanks the club. She says "patients love them". She will be sending some to the Cancer Center in Tomah, a branch of the Gundersen Medical Center of LaCrosse. She also expressed to me to keep them coming.?? Shorter stands are also welcomed for patients with shorter hair. As of today, you all have crafted a total of 43 beautiful wig stands. Please continue with your efforts. While optimized for the seated turner, it can be raised and used in the standing position - but only up to about 44" center height. And, quite frankly, where it really shines is when the turner is seated. You'll notice in the attached image that the legs are splayed and offset for chair access. This design can be a trip hazard when standing. > > > > > > > > This particular model is located in Carey, NC and available for pick-up only. The owner, Joe Bradshaw has it priced for quick sale at $3,500 (was over $6k new, and probably closer to $10k if we were still making it). On Friday, June 10th, at 6 p.m., Grammy-Award-Winner Bill Miller will be playing at the Pump House. Then on Saturday, June 11th, at 2 p.m., he will be hosting a workshop for anyone interested in making and/or playing Native American-style flutes. He promises to teach a song to those who bring their own flute. In addition, there will be lots of local art pieces to see. It should be a fun place to see what others are making. I hope the link below works for you. If not, do a search under Artspire at the Pump House in La Crosse. Hello all, A plethora of em, 18 to be exact. No 2 are alike, all beautiful works. I echo John Griffiths thanks to Denis & Doug Falch. Denis is a long time member, I believe in the founding group. He is quite the artisan, as you can see. Denis, does the turning & his brother Doug does the finishing. They are quite the tag team. More of these gifts to the cancer center patients are in the works, I'm told. Note, one is shorter, 8-10 inches as shorter ones are also desired. These are finished with Minwax brand Helmsman Spar Urethane, an indoor/outdoor clear semi-gloss product for moisture resistance. I will bring several, not all to the Saturday meeting for the display table. Please note, I will pick up any you may have completed for this charitable club project, and deliver to the Gundersen Cancer Center next week. Please identify in some fashion if you desire your gift to go to Winona Health, Virginia will take those. Thank you in advance to the membership for your past generous gifts. Please keep em coming as you feel moved. Rest assured, your hand made, quality wig stands are wonderful gifts and make a difference to those patients receiving these. As an aside, this project helps to promote the wonderful community engagement efforts our club does for the people of the Coulee Region. As of today 41 wig stands have been completed since this project was started in December 2021.
