Good evening. As mentioned during the meeting, we have a scheduled skills
demo at Holmen High School for Mar 15th. I am still looking for
Demonstrators to showcase various turning techniques. Jay, Fitz, and I are
going but the more we have there the more types of turning we can
demonstrate. We would arrive at 12-1230 to set up with the demo beginning
at 1 pm and going to 3pm. We can grab a club lathe if you want to demo but
don't have a lathe to bring. Please let me know as soon as you can so
we can plan accordingly.

Hi Folks, I recently had heart valve surgery and although things went well, I am limited to what I can do from a physical standpoint (read 10-pound lifting restriction).  So, I won't be able to do much from a lifting standpoint.   Aso never participated in this type of demonstration.  However, I'd be glad to attend and help answer questions or generally visit with students.  Thanks.  Jerry Molnar

 I am planning on participating in the demo and can bring my mini lathe but I do not have a stand but I am assuming we will be able to use on of their work benches to place my lathe on.? I will do bottle stoppers for my demo and maybe doing a finish demo on one of the stoppers.? I am also assuming we will be demonstrating in the wood shop.? I can help lift a lathe or two if people need help,? I also have a cart with wheels that I will bring to help more our equipment into the shop.? ?

I'll volunteer to demo. I've never done one before, but I'm open to new

Dear members,
I am now reading Guest Editor, Sue Harker's letter, in Woodturning magazine, issue 365. She discusses challenges in getting young people involved in turning. I suspect??turning in the UK has similar challenges as here in the Coulee Region.?Reading this letter? has moved me to send this message.?

I am so glad our club is actively engaged in educating youth in a school setting about our craft/art.? We all know that Covid-19 presents challenges to be sure; but we continue to adapt as the health threats continue to lessen.

By demonstrating what can be done using the wood lathe with people of all ages our club will grow.

At the local level, some potential additional ideas may include turning demos at craft shows, the? Norskedalen summer event, turning in Riverside or Myrick park on a weekend,? Holmen's Night Out celebration August 2022, LaCrosse's Downtown First Friday Art Walk (1st Friday each month).? I'm sure just scratching the surface, eh!?

I am cognizant of the challenges of getting volunteers to participate in these possibilities. However, as club membership grows, those opportunities may become easier to achieve over time.
As the letter in Woodturning suggests and if interested, search the Internet, "woodturning for young people".?Other possibilities?

More importantly, our thoughts and prayers are with the people of the Ukraine and Europe in these perilous times.

Hi All,

I have been negligent in keeping you posted on progress, so here it goes.
Last week I delivered the 3 wig stands I collected from the last CRW meeting
to the Gundersen Cancer Center. These were very well received. The need
continues as they continue to be given out to patients.  Thank you again to
Bob Patros, Wendell Ziegler and Rich Egan for your generosity of your time
and talents.


I just read an article on the AAW website, News & AAW messages page, a piece
showcasing what the Cumberland Woodturners in Crossville, Tn is doing. A
particular statement in the article stood out for me "Another nation-wide

Good evening. As mentioned during the meeting, we have a scheduled skills demo at Holmen High School for Mar 15th. I am still looking for Demonstrators to showcase various turning techniques. Jay, Fitz, and I are going but the more we have there the more types of turning we can demonstrate. We would arrive at 12-1230 to set up with the demo beginning at 1 pm and going to 3pm. We can grab a club lathe if you want to demo but don't have a lathe to bring. Please let me know as soon as you can so we can plan accordingly.

facility at Luther. My thought is that those interested I would meet them

Yes, as I mentioned in the previous email. Those interested in seeing the
space would meet at Luther at 0900. While the tour is going on. The admin
portion of the meeting is going on. We would return prior to the demo
portion. We would set up prior as normal.

My two cents:

Since we have a guest demonstrator that day, I think we should do the 
tour after the meeting, at 11:45 or whenever we get cleaned up after the 
meeting. That way we all could see the proposed space, and I do not want 
to appear rude to our guest.  I am afraid trying to cram set up, a tour 
and the business meeting will risk running into our guest's time, and we 
may not be able to run late with our meeting in case we have some other 
group chomping at the bit to get into the Community Center at noon.

Bottom line, I want to see the space but I think it would be best to see 
it after the meeting.

Members, when I cleaned up the sign in desk after nearly everyone had 
left, I found a book on box making and a small legal pad left behind.  
The librarians had already left.

I recall a member named Elmer coming into the meeting with a similar 
looking pad of paper.  So Elmer, did you check out the book and leaved 
the book and pad behind?

Librarians Jack, Virginia and Pam, I put the book by itself on top of 
the library case, in the plastic bin if memory serves, so it would not 
be just stuck back in with the rest of the books.

Interesting how the two that were donated to WH came from Gundersen 
folks.

I have two in very early stages right now.  But I have taken up another 
way to spend time, watercolor painting.   Brand new to it, but 12 years 
ago I was new to woodturning too.  Except I probably don't have 12 years 
left to perfect that form of art.  Healthy and hoping but...who knows 
what will trip me up.  I will be 79 in April.

to take the librarian job and Pam to be the assistant, she seems 
interested.

John, it is for Dr. Seleth, our hand surgeon. He inherited a bunch of old hats from an aunt that they like to display. Let me know what you would charge. They loved the walnut and cherry and the full cherry. I sent them an email asking about which specifics but I have not heard back from him.

I am going to apologize now. this will be a long one.

I met Dan Larsen and Phil Punzel, the principal(probably the first time I
was in a principal's office for a good reason) and we were able to address
more administrative/logistic items should we as a group decide to move to
Luther.

I will list everything to date as it stands
-Longevity; We would meet once a year to evaluate whether the arrangement
is a good value for both of us. So, no sudden eviction. If we are failing
to add value to the school or the school is not supporting us then we would
part ways
-Storage; The space on the second floor is about 12.5 feet wide by 8 foot
deep. If we were to move we would bring the fencing from the community
center to install at Luther. I envision the move taking place in July if
approved and we would be able to temporarily store items in the shop space
until our storage is in place. We will also have the elevator to move stuff
up and down. It is located adjacent to the classroom.
-Insurance; We would maintain our policies. If it is a school event we are
participating in their policy covers. Club events are under ours
-Safety; any and all members would have to take the safety course/training
for the individual tools. The club would maintain a roster of members that
have completed the training by item.
-Spaces available; We would have access to the wood shop for general
meetings and demos. One or more individuals will be identified to receive
key fobs for the doors. The commons area, the cafeteria, and the chapel are
available for larger events or specialized needs. We would have to
communicate with the school on their use and to see if there are conflicts
with other schedules. The commons and cafeteria would be for larger than
normal demos, the chapel would be for 100+ plus person events.
-Parking; There is ample parking close by the shop rear door. If needed the
commons door can be fobbed open for anyone needing help to get in.
-Cost; There is no rent for the space. We as a club would hold an open shop
night once a month minimum, where we would teach woodturning techniques. We
would set a curriculum and schedule volunteers. There is the option to hold
more than one if the subject requires it. They also would like fundraising
item donations from time to time.
-Food; We would be able to have our coffee and snacks in the classroom
space. Obviously we would strive to be good guests and clean up after

woodturning during the school days for up to a week. He works off a project
principle and can shift if an opportunity comes up for us to teach..
Instructors would have to go through a background check which the school
would pay for. This is another way to pass on our craft. It is something to
consider down the road
-Chairs; We would be able to get chairs in the shop space for the meetings.
Also we could hold the general meeting in the classroom then adjourn to the
shop for a demo.
-Display; There are cabinets near the shop space. One idea floated is that
items from our pop up gallery would be showcased there between meetings and
updated at the next meeting.
-Meeting openness; We are allowed to continue being open to all who want to
come learn. As a school club we would be added to their calendars and other
social media sites, opening us up to more visits from students and parents.
With the additional space we can reach out to other schools and invite them
as well when we have demos.
-Restrooms; Male/Female/Wheelchair accessible are about 20 feet from the
shop.

I have not made any Wig stands but I have a suggestion.

As I have been reading the various comments and some people would like to 
purchase  a stand I believe you need to have some discussion on how much
you would ask for the Wig Holder. For example a person may have found wood and
the next person purchased the wood.

One person may be happy with $15.00 - $25.00 dollars.
The next person has $20 - $25.00 in wood.

What do you do.

Good evening, as you may have heard there was an issue with Alan Lacer's
Demo for the April meeting. It also is Easter weekend so he has a family
commitment. We are looking to move his demo to October instead.
For those who have paid you can approach Jay if you want a refund,

We are also looking to sponsor students and shop teachers from Luther and
Holmen
To date we have 5 for Luther and 3 for Holmen. We would like at least 5
