My take on the topic of those cutters is they are essentially miniature scrapers so you use them like a scraper - cutting at center. And the holder will allow you to hollow inside a vessel, even just under the shoulder of a hollow form, by pivoting it in the holder. You may also vary the distance the sharpened edge protrudes by relocating it in the holder, but if you leave it longish, you cannot slip itinto a smallish holeso easily. If you are the kind of turner that prides themselves on hollowing through a tiny opening.John Jordan is a master with those type of tools, and
he can get a nice finish inside with them. John Griffiths, not so much. So I try to use a cutter with a larger radius, for a finishing cut, if not the whole process.

About 15-16 months ago we had Lyle Jamison do a Zoom demo on line and he uses a Hunter tool which actually cuts rather then scrapes and gets a very nice surface. But I suspect he could get a good cut with a dull garden hoe. Not me.

I had purchased a homemade hollowing tool from a club member several years ago and am just using it now. The bit sits with the top about 1/4" above center. I'm not sure if I set it up correctly. What should I do?
