Hello folks, I just completed a yarn bowl from white ash, hollowing it out from end-grain with my Jamison system using a shop built cutter with an Easy Wood Tool  cutter. (Even though I am enough of a snob to prefer cutting wood rather then scraping it. But my machining skills are not good enough to build one with a Hunter cutter.). The log laid on the ground for however long causing the blackish decay spot which I left as an accent rather then turning away.

Here are some shots of a bowl made from log the shop teacher at Luther donated to the club. Note the figure in the squarish end. Must have been a fork near it, the other half of the log does not have figure.

We are having a day-long Alan Lacer event for the April meeting.  Hope

Hello Members,

Heads up folks, if you have a wig stand completed, bring it to the 
meeting this Saturday for distribution.  These are treasured gifts our 
club donates to cancer patients through treatment centers.  Gundersen 
has been accepting them, and I think Winona Health will too.  Bob Patros 
posted plans for wig stands on CRWTalk not long ago.  They are not 
rocket science to make and do not have to be machined down to plus or 
minus .0001 inch to be acceptable. Thank you Bob.

Also a member, Wendell Ziegler has donated a bunch of wood the club is 
selling, there are many pieces of wood that may be used for wig stands.  
Likewise, Adrian will be donating a bunch of blanks that will be 
available at the February meeting. When you see Wendell or Adrian, be 
sure to personally thank them for their donations.

So on Saturday, please bring a wig stand if you have one made up, watch 
Ken Garden demonstrate weed pot and lidded box making and pay you dues 
if you have not yet done so.  And of course, bring your instant gallery 
items to show the world.

To dovetail on John's comment, I appreciate his continuing? promotion for the wig stands project. As I deliver the ones already completed, I echo John's comment that they are indeed treasured by the cancer care recipients.
As you complete the wig stands, please send a quality picture or 2 of your work to crw talk. I think pics are another way to help motivate and remind us. Please be sure to include your name & wood type(s) used on the stand bottom As an example, see attached picture.

I plan to drop by Saturday's meeting to pick up any additional stands you've completed; taking them to Gundersen next week.
As I have no connections at Winona Health (WH), if you want your stands to go to WH, please attach a label as such. Whoever has that WH contact should plan on taking them.?

I have a wig stand that I was planning on bringing to Saturday's meeting,
but thanks to the stomach flu ripping through our house,  I won't be
coming. Should I just save the stand until the March meeting, or is
delivery needed before then?

Andrew, and the CRW fellowship,

I think it is ready for prime time.  We will of course be collecting 
them again at the March meeting and In my opinion, a very wide range of 
design options is possible with them.  Of course, if you are moved to 
keep perfecting your design, more power to you.  Lots of people at the 
Gundersen and Winona Health cancer centers  are in need of them; and we 
all know that we ourselves are the harshest critics of our work.  So 
just keep making!

And one other design matter, wig stands are a great way to use up those 
odd bits of wood we all have laying around on our shelves, under the 
benches, on the floor (Yup, that's me).  So there is a ton of design 
freedom just built into the project.  Another factor is that the users 
of wig stands tend to be older women who are less likely to have very 
long hair, so taller stands will benefit some ladies and shorter ones 
will be welcomed by others as I am guessing that women who need wigs 
during chemo are likely to wear wigs that more or less match their hair 
length from before treatment.

Wipe On Poly is an excellent finish for wig stands, it is impervious to 
darn near anything!

I choose the highest gloss version. 
I wipe on a heavy coat, let it sink in, and
then [10 minutes or so], wipe off the
excess. 
Next day, do it again, this time lightly
wiping on without any subsequent wiping off.
 
Two, or maybe three, wiped on thin coats
will suffice. 
 
In several days, it's odor free and hard. At
this point, it'll be good for many years to

Hello members,

For those who were not able attend yesterday?s meeting, I collected 3 beautiful wig stands. One each from Bob Patros,  Wendell Ziegler and Rich Eagan.  I suspect pictures of those will be in the next newsletter along with the other instant gallery items. I will  deliver those stands toward the end next week. 

 

To elaborate further on wig stands, most women cancer patients use wig stands to store their wigs, many of which are simply made of Styrofoam, commercially available,  and are apparently handed out to patients. Young girls also get cancer, so there may be a need for them also.  I will check the next time I see Taylor at Gundersen.  The turned wig stands you?ve lovingly made thus far or are still planning to make  are extremely well received by the patients that receive them. Rest assured, the patients are so appreciative that local artisans of the Coulee Region Woodturners are thinking of them in their time of need. I?m sure most of us have family members or friends, or know personally people who have cancer or have had cancer and lost their hair as the result of treatment. Hair loss for women and girls can be very difficult. The stands you make provide some level of comfort to those patients receiving them, knowing that we care. Many clubs across the country and probably the world participate in wig stand making as a club effort.       

 

The genesis of this club project? Some of you may remember that new member at the time, Pam Day, mentioned at our outdoor meeting last summer in Onalaska, that making wig stands for women could be a good community engagement opportunity for the club.   I had completely forgotten about her suggestion.  However,  while I was undergoing radiation and chemo therapy myself at Gundersen last fall I recalled Pam?s comments. Checking with my cancer care team, I inquired if there may be a need for wig stands for patients seen there.  The cancer center coordinator contacted me,  and we had a discussion about the need.  I suggested  that our club may interested in a club project to help out.  The rest is history! 

 

To dovetail on John?s comment, I know nothing about the Winona Health cancer center.  If you desire your stand to go there, please contact John Griffiths or Aaron Gesicki.   I?m sure there is a need at other centers too, however,  I only have a relationship with the Gundersen Cancer Center, located in LaCrosse. I think another club member checked with Mayo at LaCrosse, I don?t believe they were interested?Will that person please correct me If I?m misinformed. 



Some AAW clubs make turned Beads of Courage (BOC) boxes for children undergoing medical treatment.  As far I know, both local hospitals in LaCrosse do not participate the Beads of Courage national program.  That does not mean we should not consider that opportunity. Many clubs or individual turners as you may be aware, simply make boxes, using the BOC guidelines, then ship the boxes to a participating children?s hospital. I don?t think they survive this far north. My brother lives near Des Moines, and they have lots of them, but they don?t get the real below zero cold we do. The trees don?t seem to grow very large, like many apple trees, the have thorns and those gnarly yellow green fruits. The wood has a greenish color, with darker brown rings. It?s hard, but also seems prone to cracking.

For all of my turning life, I have used the Ellsworth signature 1/2 inch bowl gouge. This probably is my 4th one. But never have I had one whereby the handle has cracked (as shown).

The good news is that Brad, at Packard, contacted Crown and Crown agreed to replace it. Even though I purchased it in 2019, they felt the handle should not have behaved badly like that. 
It was great working with Brad. Packard and Crown are given excellent marks by me!

Now that's a wonderful example of exemplar service. I've never purchased from Packard but will check em out. I have a, maybe 3/4" Crown Ellsworth sig bowl gouge, purchased between 2009-2012? One of 1st tools I purchased. Didn't know a gouge from a scraper then.? Excellent shape, hardly any wear, mostly because I don't know to effectively sharpen to the Ellsworth grind. That tool is one BA tool, a beast!?

I spoke with Sandy GruszynskiRN . She Manages all of the patients that we treat for cancer at Winona Health. She thinks that they could definitely use some stands although we don?t treat a lot of cancer here. She also brought up individuals with alopecia who have to wear wigs. I would be happy to bring them to Winona especially as her office is just down the hall from mine.

Maybe going forward, as a suggestion to the membership, if you want your wig stands to go to Winona Health, please identify on your stand in some fashion as such & contact Virginia directly.

For general info, "alopecia" simply refers to hair loss, can be due to a variety of causes.b

If anyone is considering Chattanooga, I can vouch for the program and the city. Lived just up the road for a few years. Downtown area is renovated and safe. 
The Tennessee Aquarium, minor league baseball, the Riverwalk and Bridges, the Hunter Museum, and Sugar?s Ribs on Lookout Mtn. 
As is obvious, I?m thinking about it.
