So, no sudden eviction. If we are failing to add value to the school or the school is not supporting us then we would part ways -Storage; The space on the second floor is about 12.5 feet wide by 8 foot deep. If we were to move we would bring the fencing from the community center to install at Luther. I envision the move taking place in July if approved and we would be able to temporarily store items in the shop space until our storage is in place. We will also have the elevator to move stuff up and down. It is located adjacent to the classroom. *As we encounter problems with storage of equipment, we can work with the school and Mr. Larsen to find solutions that work for both parties.* -Insurance; We would maintain our policies. If it is a school event we are participating in their policy covers. Club events are under ours. *I have spoken with our insurance agent about the possible move and no changes to our policy would be needed. As long as we continue to update things as they change we can change the coverage as needed. * -Safety; any and all members would have to take the safety course/training for the individual tools. The club would maintain a roster of members that have completed the training by item. -Spaces available; We would have access to the wood shop for general meetings and demos.*The shop and its tools would NOT be available for personal use, only club related activities.* One or more individuals will be identified to receive key fobs for the doors. The commons area, the cafeteria, and the chapel are available for larger events or specialized needs. We would have to communicate with the school on their use and to see if there are conflicts with other schedules. The commons and cafeteria would be for larger than normal demos, the chapel would be for 100+ plus person events. -Parking; There is ample parking close by the shop rear door. If needed the commons door can be fobbed open for anyone needing help to get in. -Cost; There is no rent for the space. We as a club would hold an open shop night once a month minimum, where we would teach woodturning techniques. We would set a curriculum and schedule volunteers. There is the option to hold more than one if the subject requires it. They also would like fundraising item donations from time to time. -Food; We would be able to have our coffee and snacks in the classroom space. Obviously we would strive to be good guests and clean up after ourselves. Larger scale (Meals during an all day class/demo would be done in the cafeteria. Communication with the school ahead of time to make sure the spaces are available. -Internet; For the purpose of streaming the meetings we would Identify the devices the would be going onto the school network and their IT would load the necessary info(username and password) -Teaching during school hours; Dan Larsen is open to letting us teach woodturning during the school days for up to a week. He works off a project principle and can shift if an opportunity comes up for us to teach.. Instructors would have to go through a background check which the school would pay for. This is another way to pass on our craft. It is something to consider down the road -Chairs; We would be able to get chairs in the shop space for the meetings. We could also hold the general meeting in the classroom then adjourn to the shop for a demo. -Display; There are cabinets near the shop space. One idea floated is that items from our pop up gallery would be showcased there between meetings and updated at the next meeting. -Meeting openness; We are allowed to continue being open to all who want to come learn. As a school club we would be added to their calendars and other social media sites, opening us up to more visits from students and parents. With the additional space we can reach out to other schools and invite them as well when we have demos. -Restrooms; Male/Female/Wheelchair accessible are about 20 feet from the shop. *The biggest thing to remember is communication and mutual respect. Should the move be approved it will be a change from what we as a club have known for a while. With communication and mutual respect we can continue to grow as a club. * -- James A. It is a Walker Turner brand, probably 1950?s-1960?s and probably has a 6? swing, with a cutout near the headstock for bowl turning, about a 36? length bed, cast iron ways and a box full of things such as the tailstock etc. It has a long, perhaps 18? tool rest. It has a perhaps 1/2 HP motor with a step pulley/Jack shaft setup for multiple speeds. The headstock has ball bearings with no wiggle. Pretty small diameter headstock shaft maybe 3/4?, so not a setup for heavy cross grain things we like to make. An ideal backup for your Beal Buffing system perhaps. If you want to restore an old machine this just might be your project. It is missing a step pulley. He also has a cardboard box half full of Buck brand gouges and chisels, old as the hills and I don?t have a clue what kind of steel they would be, they did not have rust. (One roughing gouge was duller then my garden hoe, unless it was sharpened you could use it for burnishing!) He wants to sell the tools separately. Now, if restoring a lathe is not your cup of tea, he has a 1964 Jaguar XKE, one that the hood is half the overall length of the car. Faster then greased lightning, I nearly wrecked one something over 50 years ago. Zero to 80 in no time. I stopped at Denis Falch's yesterday, and let me tell you, he is putting his sit-down Oneway through it's paces with wig stands. We all know he is a master turner and even though he has health concerns that prevent him attending meetings, he is turning. He had nine completed ones for Gundersen which I picked up, some are hardwood and some construction grade 2x6 pine lumber ones (trust me, they are as attractive as walnut, cherry or maple) which he turned and his brother Doug finished. Doug applied a wonderful finish to the stands. Three more were awaiting finish and part of another one was mounted on the lathe. So bring your stands in Saturday, Kevin or Aaron will get them photographed, they will be in the instant gallery and then Bob and Virginia will deliver them. I have some two-by lumber laying around so by George, I'm going to put it to use for next month. See you Saturday, either in person on on Zoom. Oh, one more time, here is how you do Zoom: a desktop or laptop is best. Phones and tablets work fine but the screens are pretty darn small. Laptops usually have a built in camera/microphone, I had to buy one at Target for my desktop and it plugs into any USB port on the computer. Best Buy and Walmart should have them too. Download Zoom.com on your computer or device at some time before the meeting, will not take too long, just click on the blue link. James already sent out a meeting invitation in an email, so a few minutes before 9AM on Saturday just click on the long line of blue print in the middle of the email. Your machine is smart enough to just read that and go to Zoom that now lives inside you computer, it will ask you a couple of times if you want to open it or something like that, click on the box that says you do, and give it a few moments to open. If you get there early, just sip your coffee until James gets the meeting opened. It will happen, might take a few minutes though. You may have to click something down on the lower right corner of your screen to turn on the camera and microphone. That's all there is. We try during the meeting to keep the speaker or demonstrator in camera view so viewers at home can watch the speaker and the lathe, listen and ask questions. And when you think of it, thank James for the use of his cellphone data plan, the meetings are a pretty high use of cellphone data. By the way, if the move to Luther is approved, the school has high speed internet and wi fi which we will be able to use for free; so we expect to be able to produce better remote meetings for those who cannot attend in person So, again, see you in person or remotely Saturday. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The attraction is the combination of random patterns created in the wood and the almost instantaneous and effortless results. It can be done, safely. I've seen it, with a professional Electrical Engineer doing the demonstrating. It has the same lethal potential as ripping on a table saw - do it wrong and bad things happen. The actions of ripping and burning are so different, however, that the latter, with its lack of motion and noise doesn't give any signals of lethality. If you aren't properly insulating and isolating this process, when you flip the switch on, you can put your lights out - forever. By the way, I grew up in Marathon County, and have friends in and around Rozellville. Not familiar with the two family names of the victims. Fractal woodburning turned pieces are shown on YouTube and used to enhance pieces. I have always understood it to be a tricky, and potentially dangerous method but this article shows it can be lethal as well. I had often considered trying it but will not take a chance after reading this sad account.
