Being as hard and old, the oak was causing some problems. There were some time constraints, so I could not finish the platter. Here are three pictures of the finished product. The first one is looking at the top. If you look closely, you can see the two grooves on the rim have had some texturing done to them. I used the Decorating Elf for these. The second shows the bottom and the third shows a side view. I also mentioned using a couple adapters which make recentering a piece off a chuck easier. These two adapters can be found at Craft Supplies. The first one is called Reverse Chucking Alignment Adapter, page 56 of new catalog, part number 979-365, you specify thread size, price $29.95. This one utilized the No. 2 Morse Taper in the tail stock. The second one mounts on a One Way, PowerMAtic or Robust live center utilizing the threads. Saturday October 16 is the big day. We are honored to have Mark Palma demonstrate for us. He has done a number of enjoyable demos for us over the years. This time he will be sharing his wisdom on the care and feeding of carbide tools, both the scraping ones and cutting ones. He published an article for AAW a few months ago about his study of the different brands and types and did a lot of turning with them to ferret out the strengths and weaknesses of each. So he will have a ton of information to share, and will be showing the fine points of them on a lathe. The jury is still out regarding Friday night setup. James will be posting about that. Regardless, we will need members to help set up Saturday morning so if you can, please show up at 8 AM to help. It is much appreciated. If you can't make the meeting, James will be streaming it and will be sending out the link. Remember to personally thank James for the use of his cell phone data plan for the streaming, streaming a meeting uses up a ton of data that he pays for. That will be the case until the Community Center has Wi Fi. Adrian mentioned to me that we had decided way back in the prehistoric, non-pandemic days we had decided to move the November meeting to the Second Saturday because of deer season. That has completely slipped my mind so this is something to discuss in the business meeting Saturday as well. Several members have kindly volunteered to do Demos in 2022. I have to sit down to go through my notes and put together a list for the membership and that is on my to-do list. And feel free to offer a demo. We also need to begin paying our 2022 dues, $36 for single members under the age of 80, $25 for students and 80 or over, $50 for couples/families. Lets keep Jay hopping so be sure to give him your dues. We need to think about officers for next year. If you would like to hold office, we would love to have you. Lastly, bring your work in for instant gallery. That is always a great part of our meetings. John -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I applied your teaching and got a nice result on a pretty distressed piece of white ash that had laid in a wetland around Holcomb WI before sitting in my shed for 11 years. Next step will be to do some bowl gouge work to refine the shape and remove the imperfections and torn end grain. Of course I will then reverse and hollow it, again with carbide and save my steel tools for the finish work. Thanks for the wisdom you shared yesterday. (End plan for the bowl is to woodburn a decorative band following the natural edge on the outside after it is sanded and still chucked). Again thanks for your demo and we will have you back late next summer or fall. John -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Basically, that means doing what we have done long before I ever heard of CRW, but now that we are reforming ourselves for a post pandemic world, it is time to get that part of the program restarted. We decided at the meeting last Saturday to get ourselves back in stride. In the past we have made our presence in the community known in many ways, with the Empty Bowls at Holmen HS, the art fairs and events at Norskedalen, Luther HS, the list goes on. The Art Fairs and events like that are somewhat out of our control, we go when invited. So if we hear of them, we should try to make them. Please let board members know if there is an event you hear of that we could attend. We will need club volunteers to make these possible, not only the fun part of demonstrating and talking incessantly about woodturning; but also the grunt work of hauling lathes and the like. (I want to add a shout out to Jim Frank, Duane Hill, John Phillips, Dan Check and others for handling the leadership in the past. And like I said above, if you hear of something coming up, let the board know. James has taken the youth and school involvement bull by the horns with good success. Please help at the upcoming events. We are trying to build on this as well so if you hear of something...you know the drill. We might take on a Freedom Pens project. That involves making Slimline pens for the Military, always a noble cause. The AAW magazine mentions Beads of Courage boxes but I don't know if any of our local medical centers are involved. If you know something along thee lines or have a lead to pursue, let the club leadership know. We may join in some volunteer activities where some warm bodies are needed, if we do something as a club event we could wear our CRW apparel while volunteering. Thank you John. To consider. As we participate in these events, whoever is the ring leader, please consider writing a short article showcasing the club?s involvement and submitting to the AAW Journal in care of Joshua Friend, editor at woodturner.org Many clubs write up their involvement; you can read about many of these in the Journal, usually in the Woodturners Chatter section. It?s way to toot our horn. One of my ?favorite? phases also. In a previous life, I was community civic engagement coordinator for a local college. One can do direct engagement to help those non profits, such as Ringing the Salvation Army Bell, bar tending at local festivals, delivering mobile meals to name a few. Or club members could donate wood turned items to be used in fundraising auctions for such non-profit organizations as the Gundersen Medical Center, The Cancer Center?s Paula?s Purse for their annual auction. Would the club consider putting together a collective ?basket of turned or other wood objects? for Paula?s Purse Benefit silent auction or raffle? I?m sure there are many other non-profit organizations that do similar things. Here is partial list of LOCAL non-profits that may have annual auctions in which we can submit turned items; its a place to start. * NASA?North American Squirrel Association, Recreational Therapy | Special Needs | Disabilities | NASA Squirrel . Wood turned items for their annual fundraiser banquet/auction. * New Horizons, shelter and outreach centers, Home - New Horizons (nhagainstabuse.org) , donate wood turned items for their annual auction, and/or make TShirt stands for their annual fall clothesline project. * Coulee Council on Additions, Coulee Recovery Center , Spring Auction? * Onalaska Education Foundation, Inc. onalaskafoundation.org, make items to fill a ?basket? of wood turned items, auction held in February. * Habitat for Humanity, Habitat for Humanity , place a 2x4 build board to be present at our club meetings, throw in a buck or more! I?m sure there are many more organizations. In short, start making items you?d be willing to donate, pack them away on shelf, then when the time comes you?ll have a ready supply to donate. Bowls, platters, ice scream scoops, salt and pepper grinders, nice pens, seam rippers, candle sticks, weed pots, yarn bowls, etc., are always nice basket stuffers. Thanks Bob. I think the next step is for a member or two or three to adopt one or another of these ideas and lead a club effort on them. Talk among yourselves then bring the idea up at a meeting and launch it. Does not have to be board members leading or doing it, I think it is safe to say that any idea you have that will benefit the club and the community, is worth taking on. For example, Jim Frank has lead the Squirrel Club thing in the past. Many many ideas to pursue. Actually it was a very profitable chunk of wood, it gave up a yarn bowl, five ?6 in 1? screwdriver sets sold unfinished as a special order and finally this beautiful bowl. The log had lain on the ground too long so was not at it?s best when I began rubbing bevels against it. Finished with many coats of wipe-on poly. He has an older Shopsmith he would like to get rid of. I t works. He has been using the lathe function on it primarilly. He has 5 lathe tools (don't know which tools) and all the gear for the table saw and drill press. Based on the picture, it could use a little cleaning up. If you are interested, his phone number is in the attached e-mail. The price seems right, free for pick up.
