Hello members, I dug an ash log about 20? long by 7? out of my shed and found this natural edge bowl inside it. Actually it was a very profitable chunk of wood, it gave up a yarn bowl, five ?6 in 1? screwdriver sets sold unfinished as a special order and finally this beautiful bowl. The log had lain on the ground too long so was not at it?s best when I began rubbing bevels against it. Finished with many coats of wipe-on poly. So, we will meet a week sooner than usual. (We have not heard from James that we can not use the Community Center that day so it must be OK.) Our program will feature Adrian doing his long anticipated Basket Weave Illusion demo. It will be good so either attend in person or via Zoom and Czech it out. A reminder, Adrian is learning a new language, Czech, so if he has trouble trouble getting his point across in the King?s English, he may start speaking Czech to clarify things. Now since the holiday season is upon us, I have been getting myself in the festive mood. Not by downing brandy or tipping the Spotted Cows, but making ornaments and have included a photo of a couple. One is a hollow bark-on ornament with a long finial, the other a birdhouse of gnarly red cedar and a cherry wood perch. I used actual hollowing tools to make the hollowform one but confess to cheating on the birdhouse by hollowing with Forstner bits. My bad, but I am not the least bit repentant. See ya Saturday and safe hunting. I'm looking forward to the Czech language version of the basket weave. Often a little clueless in regular English, so the Czech version won't be any different for me. I printed out a set because even I can follow directions enough to pull something like this off. John Fisher brought up a great way to kick off such a club project would be a challenge. Bob Raasch will speak with the cancer treatment folks at Gundersen about whether they would be open to receiving them. If anyone has connections at Mayo or the Cancer Society, let the board know. I envision this being a project that will be started as a challenge and evolving into an ongoing mission for the club. Do any members have access to some decent hardwood timber? Maple or ash. Elm, poplar, box elder or oak. Or other hardwoods that might be laying in someone's shed. We don't need expensive woods like cherry or walnut, no burls required, no exotics, just functional woods that can be turned into pleasing shapes. Just some 2 or 21/2" by 6" and some 1 1/2" by 1 1/2" pieces about 10-12" long. Pretty dry of course. I foresee us receiving donations of wood and giving sets of blanks to members to turn into the stands which would be displayed at meetings and then donated. A shout out is due for Pam Day, one of our newer members for this idea. Three cheers, Pam. Pam. Pam. When I have more time, I am going to dig through the piles of my lifetime supply of wood to see what I can come up with. I think I have some stuff that can be sawn into blanks and made into stands. Nothin' fancy, some ash and box elder but serviceable. A note in the directions Bob Patros sent along mentions finishes, sounds like polyurethane is the best for durability, being impervious to the chemicals used in the wigs or their cleaning and more importantly, avoiding toxicity. Please consider volunteering, whether it is donating blanks, turning the stands or other aspects of such a project. I have plans to bring a lot of smaller turning blanks. A LOT OF PIECES, ALL DRY READY TO TURN. A lot of them would be a good size for what you are referring to. I also will bring some smaller burly pieces , and maybe some larger stock. I don't do much turning anymore and I feel the club has rewarded me many times over. So for a price, I may ask for a membership for next year. Will talk about it when I bring the stock. Most likely the December meet. The Kids were extremely interested in what we had to offer. They are looking forward to the hands on pen turning demo on the 15th. With that being said I am hoping to have at least 6 of us there for the hands-on portion of the demo. They anticipate up to 30 kids making pens (slimline wood pens) so the more stations we can bring, the more time spent mentoring and teaching versus trying to rush them through. We will bring all 3 club lathes, they have one jet mini, and any other lathes we can bring. We will also need scrapers, and any carbide tools we can muster for the majority of the kids. Jay has been nice enough to drill glue and round the blanks for the kids. Finish wise was planning on using the finish Jay has for his pens unless there are any other suggestions( looking for a simple application product). The school is providing sandpaper for finishing and will reimburse the club for parts. I am asking to please respond to this email if you are planning to assist with the hands on. Please indicate if you are bringing a lathe or need the club lathe. In Service -- James A. Bloomer -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
