Mainly I have some bowls and vases. And a receipt would possibly be helpful but mainly I do want to make a donation to New Horizons. Small sparky surprise under lid, green India ink accents, Mylands friction polish. Kris, I too have worked with New Horizons, different role than John G. After I retired teaching from Western Tech College, I was Service Learning Coordinator there while working for the US Americorps for awhile. During that stint I? had the Wood Technique program students make wood crosses for the New Horizons Clothesline project. Abused? children & women would decorate T shirts to bring awareness of abuse, & share their trauma in a graphic way & display them on the wood crosses. The displays were at various places around LaCrosse in? October, this was 2008. The Clothesline project is an ongoing annual national event, calling attention to abuse. I hope our club can contribute to Horizon's cause. My personal family contributes to them. They do great work. Guys & Gals, please help out. If you choose not make something for their auction, maybe a financial contribution could be made. Thanks Kris Clough for spearheading this auction event. A reminder of our upcoming meeting about two weeks from now, Saturday March 20, usual time and on Zoom. Our professional demonstrator will be Lyle Jamieson and he will virtually demonstrate how he creates a hollow form. He is a master at hollowing and this entire demo will be detailed and oriented toward our club. He will take questions during the demo, as if he were in a live meeting and we were right there two or three rows away from the lathe. So we won't be able to watch it on a big screen from the front of the room, but it will be the next best thing. It will last about two hours and we will have the briefest of business meetings before. President Bloomer will moderate the questions and pass them along to him. It will be broadcast from his shop; and he has the equipment and know how to make it a good experience. And if the workpiece comes flying out of his lathe, it won't hit one of us sitting in the line of fire in front of the lathe. Coulee Region Woodturners is paying for this demo and it is free and open to all members. He did ask that we not invite other clubs to tune in. Reasonable enough I believe. Keep an eye on your email. He will send a meeting invitation to one of our officers which will in turn be distributed to the CRW mailing list. Keep an eye open for it's arrival, (and don't accidentally delete it, like I am prone to doing). Still not comfortable with Zoom? Or just in need of some woodturning socialization? On Wednesday March 10 at 7:00 PM we will have a social hour consisting of talk about woodturning, showing off your work, more woodturning talk and maybe even some mindless chatter. James will send out an invitation so try tuning in and getting used to the Zoom system so you will be up and ready for the Jamieson demo nine days later. Full disclosure here, I found Zoom a bit daunting in the beginning but after some meetings and family gatherings, it got pretty easy. New to Zoom? Just download Zoom.us on your computer ahead of time and have your computer save it. A few minutes before the meeting begins click on the line of blue type on the invitation, give your computer or other device time to think about it, and you will have to give you system permission a couple of times by clicking on boxes that come up on the screen. Bye and bye the event will show up on your screen. Make sure you turn on the microphone and camera so others can hear you wonderful voice and see your smiling countenance. Still have questions, shoot them to me and I'll answer them or get someone who knows what they are doing to help you out. To the staff at New Horizons, ? I am the secretary of the Coulee Region Woodturners club here in the La Crosse region.? Our members create hand made bowls, vases, platters and boxes out of wood and other materials.? At the last meeting, one of our members commented that he has too much "inventory" built up and was wanting to donate some of it to a local organization. I suggested New Horizons and several other members agreed that this would be a good organization to support.?? ? I have a couple of ideas on what our club could do to offer support.? One, we could donate items that can be auctioned off at your fundraisers.? Two, I see that one of the items on your donation list is fidget toys.? Many of our members turn tops.? I'm not sure if this would qualify as a fidget toy in your mind or not.? Three, donate items to be given to people utilizing the shelter so they get something new just for them as they start a new chapter of their lives. ? Please let me know if our club could be of assistance to your organization. ? Sincerely, ? Saturday, 3-20-21, 9:00-11:30 am CST Join Zoom Meeting https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89078080723?pwd=TzYzbzFlWGFBSzdadUlZdTBJVXNTZz09 Meeting ID: 890 7808 0723 Passcode: 059305 Here is a sample of the note to members I have used before: This strange journey we have embarked on is a very trying time for all of us. We are separated from family, friends and activities that we normally don't even think twice about undertaking. Woodturning club meetings have been canceled. We are holding Interactive Remote Demonstrations in the comfort and safety of your own homes. It is easy free download to join a virtual meeting. Enjoy your time in the shop by staying connected to your club. Lyle Jamieson will be hosting a live, interactive demonstration of Hollow Form Techniques the Easy Way, on Saturday, March 20, 2021, 9:00am to 12:00am Central time. We will all be viewing and participating from the comfort and safety of your own home, no meeting required. We will use a group meeting software called Zoom. This is live and interactive. You will see and hear his demo and he will see and hear you as you comment, question, or live chat if needed. Lyle will have immediate feedback and respond to questions. You need to do two things. First, download a free application and second, join the meeting. You can download the free Zoom app ahead of time at www.zoom.us. It is free. You can use your computer if you have a camera and mic on it. You can use a laptop, you can use a iPad, you can use your phone. You definitely do NOT need to enter a ?free trial? for a paid account. No credit card info needed. However, you do need to download and install Zoom. ?Zoom Cloud Meeting? download. On the meeting day join a meeting by clicking on the encrypted link. Fast, best, and easy way to the meeting. Or open Zoom first and use the Meeting ID and Password. Follow the prompts to join, join with audio, and join with video. The meeting will be open at 8:30am and the demo will start at 9:00am. Lyle Jamieson is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting. As you browse the schedule which is enclosed as a pdf document you will note we are planning an outdoor in person meeting at the Community Center Shelter for our June meeting. A member has volunteered to gather the cleaning materials required for in person meetings and all in attendance will be asked to utilize COVID precautions. The Shelter has electricity so we are probably going to do a small Round Robin assuming we can wheel at least one Jet lathe out to the shelter north of the parking lot. Plan B would be to use the 120 volt outlet on the outside of the Community Center building, or if the Powermatic lathe is required, wheel it out onto the sidewalk next to the building as the power cord for it is probably long enough to plug into the 240 volt outlet we use for it inside. If we meet next to the Community Center, we will use the club's Easy-Up shelter and other members will bring theirs as needed too. Jack expects to have the library up and running for the June meeting, most likely having members stepping into the building a few at a time to return and check out materials. The library staff will sanitize our materials as needed, and recently returned items will not be checked out again at the same meeting, instead they will be quarantined until the following month. It was not discussed; but is probably reasonable to do the same with tool loans. So if you have borrowed items, plan to return them and check out more in June. We had a very interesting demo by Lyle Jamieson on March 20, 21 people attended. We hope more members will take part in our virtual meetings, and those who are doing them are finding they work almost as well as in person. (We do recommend wearing pants to the virtual meetings in case you have to get up and walk around while the camera is running. Or at least tasteful pajama bottoms.) As far as club member demos go, Adrian Novak and John Fisher will be demonstrating as we go in person. I need one other person to offer up a topic. And you know me, I'm shameless when it comes to asking for volunteers and am really open to a lot of topics. So please step up. You all know how to find me. The Sat club's IRD was truly a wonderful opportunity. To be honest, I thought the topic was going to be deep hollowing, which it wasn't, so was planning only watch a wee bit. However, while his technique is applied to his shallow hollow form as well as a deeper form, it is universal. I watched with enthusiasm till the very end. I was impressed with Lyle's skill in turning, use? of tools & video-sound as well a patient teacher. He was very deliberate in all stages of the process, from planning the project? to turning. He answered questions posed. Lyle did not rush any part of the demo. IMHO, he is truly a skilled performer. I've participated in numerous IRD's, mostly thru the AAW, Lyle's right up there with best. The IRD, if done properly with the appropriate technology is as good or possibly better than bringing someone to the clubhouse. And, ya can stay in your jammies if desired! As with most performers, they tout the stuff they sell and he was no different. I do appreciate his advice on equipment simplicity. His use of a laser for hollowing appeared to be straight forward & simple, without the use of a computer, monitor, etc. That has some appeal to me.? Check out his website for info.? Lyle's stressing the use of faceplate? for safety & simplicity struck a note for me. His demo using it made it look so easy and using it would reduce costs, especially for a new turner starting out. Will I give up using my multiple 4 jaw chucks? Prob not! But, I will try to be more judicious in their? use. I've had the experience of most; that flying projectile coming hell-bent for me outta that chuck, seemingly without warning!? Yup, after you've changed underwear,? then analyze the event, you can usually see the cause(s). Member? participation was extremely small, 20-22? I'm sure the? Jamieson demo was not of low cost. So, it is too bad we didn't have better turnout. I appreciate that John Griffiths & Jim Bloomer did a good job in promoting this jewel.
