All will be at the usual third Saturday 9 AM meeting time but in the comfort of your own home. Now I have done a few Zoom events and no, they are not like an in person event but they are pretty darn good. My family even did a Christmas gift opening via Zoom and it was nice. Anyway, this old dog had to learn a few new tricks to make Zoom work but, by George, he did. And I'm pretty sure that if I can do it, you folks can too. Heck, some of you remember when I joined the club not knowing doodley squat about turning, I learned a few things here and there and now can make some cool things. Trust me, you can do the same with Zoom. We have a past and now reenlisted member, Aaron Gesicki demonstrating for our regular January meeting. This will be a full fledged meeting with a business meeting, socialization, instant gallery and the demo. He will be Zooming into our computers and there are some instructions for Zoom attached. The attachment, Zoom for Newbies, comes to us courtesy of Lyle Jamieson. (As previously mentioned, he will be demonstrating at our meeting in March for a 2.5 hour meeting.) Please open the attachment, perhaps print it or save it to your computer. Study it and remember, you got to follow computer instructions carefully and do the steps in the proper order or nothing happens. Not like making a pumpkin pie where you throw in more or less the right amount of nutmeg and it will still taste good, got to be exact here. Wondering if you can make it work? If you have questions, I think the board would be agreeable to putting together an educational Zoom meeting where we would schedule a meeting and take live phone calls from you if you need a bit of coaching to get it to run. And that would be the purpose of the meeting, getting it to run so you can participate in the actual meeting I fear I am getting way too complicated here, but you will be getting an email with a Zoom Invitation on it before each meeting. A few minutes before the meeting you click on the line of blue print and that will be your ticket to the party. Click through the choices the computer offers, say yes to "Do you want to open this file" kind of questions. Your computer will have to think about it but bye and bye, it will open. Just be sure to have practiced jumping through the hoops ahead of time and have Zoom downloaded on the device you will be using. I will be sending out more stuff about meetings and Zoom as the meeting time approaches, stay tuned, and shoot me any questions you have. We will have a number of virtual club meetings and demonstrations starting in January, starting with a former member who has returned to the area, Aaron Gesicki.? He intends to rejoin the club and will present a virtual demo.? He has asked us to poll the membership about which topics we would like to have him discuss.? He is an engineer with knowledge of metallurgy and a skilled turner as well.? Please open the attachment 2021 Woodturner's Presentation Checklist.pdf and let us know what particular topics you would like to have him discuss.? The meeting will be presented on Zoom, with a business meeting, the demo, socialization prior to the meeting and instant gallery.? Specific information on using Zoom to follow. Our February meeting will also be via Zoom.? We are considering another member demo, this one from the Bloomer family shop on using 3D printing in conjunction with turning to create unusual pieces. March, the club is bringing in Lyle Jamieson, a professional turner.? He will do a 2 1/2 hour demonstration on creating hollow forms.? It will be via Zoom, open to club members for free and has questions and answers built in to his presentation.? He and James will handle the technical matters to make this work.? Mr. Jamieson is a well known professional who has perfected the art of creating beautiful hollow pieces.? He is a strong advocate of his system using a captured boring bar but his teachings will guide all of us in our quest for the perfect hollow form. April will be another masterwork from the Bloomer family shop, featuring Ashley Bloomer and her molded plastic pen blanks and pens.? Again, via Zoom. May will take us on a virtual trip to the Peachtree State.? Mike Peace will demonstrate.? He is a well known turner, very active on YouTube.com and the board is considering a topic for him to discuss. Folks, Zoom is a useful technology that some find intimidating.? We want everyone to be able utilize this for our club activities as we await those pokes in the arm that will enable us to eventually become able to meet in person.? We intend to use Zoom to enable both the pre-meeting socialization we all enjoy as well as the business, demos and instant gallery that make our club worthwhile.? It seems intimidating but as a certified old goat, even I have managed to make it work.? Basically, the meeting host, who is the person controlling the Zoom meeting, will send out an email sometime prior to the meeting.? That email has a long line of blue colored print.? Click on that line of print a few minutes before the meeting is to start.? Then in a moment it will ask you if you want to open Zoom Client, click "yes".? It will probably ask one or two other questions about opening something or other, click yes.? Have your sound turned on.? You will need a computer with a camera and microphone.? I believe most or all laptops have them.? I use a desktop so bought a webcam a few months ago for about $30.00 that perches on top of the monitor and plugs into a USB slot in the box.? You may have to click on something to turn the camera and microphone on. When the system loads you will see a large screen view of whoever is speaking and small pictures of others attending the meeting.? Please try to figure this out and ask whatever questions you have beforehand.? James Bloomer is the club's Zoom guru who will take questions and will assist you in getting up and running so you can attend meetings with the least amount of frustration. Please remember to open Aaron's Woodturner's Presentation Checklist above and list the topics you would have an interest in him discussing in a reply email. The club will be holding a virtual meeting via Zoom at the usual time, 9:00 AM this Saturday. So you will have to supply your own donuts and coffee. Watch and participate from your desktop computer, you will need a camera/microphone to plug into a USB port on your computer. (That is one of those funny looking little flat plugs and most computers have several plug ins.) Run on down to Best Buy or some electronic counter in places like Target, Walmart and so on to buy one. About $30.00 for a perfectly adequate cheap one. Or if you have a laptop, they have built in camera and microphones, that allows you to sit on your sofa with your feet up or to stretch out in the recliner. Tablets and smart phones work too. But the problem is they have a small screen. Agenda will be: 1, Pre-meeting socialization starting 8:30, or so. Sign into the meeting using the Invitation which will be sent out by either Aaron or James Bloomer. Chat and say hello to all of us. 2, Business meeting. James will moderate the business meeting just like any other meeting we have had 3, Instant Gallery. Have some of your recent work nearby and proudly hold it up in front of the camera and tell us about it. (A bit of bragging is encouraged.) 4, Virtual demonstration by Aaron Gesicki, a former member who returned to the area and re-upped in CRW. His topic has not been carved in stone, but will possibly have to do with tools, different tool materials from carbon steel on up and perhaps related topics. 5, Anything for thew good and the welfare of the club. One caution, remember if you attend using a portable device, DO NOT carry it to the bathroom with you. Seriously embarrassing consequences could occur. So please watch your email for further information, more info on using Zoom from our club experts and an invitation. (The invitation will be an email with a bunch of black and white type on it and a mile long line of blue type in the middle. About one half hour or closer to the meeting time open that email and click on the line of blue type, that will get you to the Zoom club meeting meeting. You will likely have to tell your computer to go to or open or download some things once you click on the line of type, that is legit and you need to do it. You won't be loading your machine up with garbage. Also you might have to click somewhere on the screen to turn on the camera and microphone. After you jump through those hoops the meeting will be live and if before 9 AM you can talk with others After 9 AM the real meeting begins. Hoping to see you all Saturday, stay safe, John -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Chances are your computer is going to ask your permission a couple of times to perform some operations to open the meeting. Click "Yes" or what ever affirmative it asks and give it a moment to think. 3, When it opens make sure your camera and microphone is turned on. 4, That's it. You should see everyone in a small picture and whoever is talking in a large picture. Have your coffee, your donuts and your instant gallery pieces ready to display in front of the camera when the time comes. First is an Oneida Dust Deputy. It does an excellent job of collecting dust without clogging the filter on a shop vacuum. $25. Second is a Craftsman 7? wobble dado, carbide. Quite easy to fine tune and makes quite nice cuts. $25. Third is a Freud stack dado, 6? carbide set with all the cutters and thin washers of varying thickness for ultra fine tuning of your cut with a perfectly flat bottom. Bit more putzy then the wobble set but if you are exacting about your dados. This is your tool. $25. I will donate 25% of the sales of these to CRW. Sign up if you like, probably well worth the fee. We are having a virtual demo from him for our regular March meeting via Zoom and it is free to CRW folks. It will be 2.5 hours long on hollowing. Complete with Q & A which our club president will moderate. We had a good club meeting last Saturday. And I heard from someone who had the camera turned off and it went well. So I learned that even if you don't have a camera and microphone on your computer, you can still watch. Just can't ask questions out loud.
