Sadly, I recall she too has passed about a year ago. I recall Shorty giving a demo on making custom wood handles for fly fishing rods in my early days in the club; if memory serves, he built them for a custom rod builder out west. He had to be up in years as it seems back when I first became treasurer, he was getting the 80 or older membership discount even then. We should have a moment of silence for him at the next meeting. Yup, we are locked and loaded and ready to proceed with vigor. The meeting will officially begin at 9AM. But we need to get set up so please plan to arrive early to assist. The doors will open at 8AM. We will follow CDC guidelines for safety, please follow masking and distancing recommendations in place for that day. The meeting will be livestreamed over Zoom for those who cannot or prefer not to attend. El Presidente James will take care of that, watch for the Zoom notification. You may recall the June meeting was streamed. Streaming is a work in progress and we expect it to be even better this time around. If you watch via streaming, please let us know how the experience was for you so we can improve. Our talented assistant Librarian, Jack will demonstrate the making of rings. He has his AV materials all set to go. This promises to be an interesting and informative day. Jack and Virginia remind us to bring back any library items that were checked out before the pandemic so if you have anything that you may have around, and perhaps forgotten about, items, please bring them to the meeting. Jack mentioned that we have many "new" woodturning magazines as we have continued the subscriptions through the pandemic. If you have any tools checked out, Duane will check them in and remember you can borrow tools as well. Remember we are not collecting dues for 2021, your 2020 membership is carrying over. We are accepting donations from members to help underwrite club activities, and expect to resume regular dues for 2022. Future demos include Duane Hill demonstrating making Platters in September, we know Duane is a crowd pleaser. In October we have Mark Palma demonstrating the use of Carbide Tools. Mark has done a lot of research of different carbide tools and published articles on that topic which he will share with us. Mark always gives a great demo as well.Adrian Novak will do his long awaited Basket Weave Illusion demo in November. This was scheduled since 2019 so we presume that with all that time lapse, he has mastered the art of basket weave illusion even more. December will be our annual potluck meeting. Next year John Fisher is going to tell us everything we need to know about plant stands, Duane will revisit texturing and will demonstrate coring. We have Alan Lacer scheduled for a full day in person demo, topic to be determined. There will be a fee for that. We will be considering some other pros too, most likely remote, to be played to us at the Center. So y'all, I am pretty excited about this and hope to see you in our upcoming meetings. Coincidentally, the Delta variant is raging about us as well. So I want to mention a couple of things: If you attend in person feel free to mask up between bites of your donut or sips of that great Cafe CRW Coffee. I plan to wear one to the extent possible. Help keep everyone safer. Secondly, the meeting will be live streamed so you may watch it from home. (Sorry, no home delivery of coffee and donuts.) We will do everything we can to make the live stream part work; but this is new territory for us so offer any suggestions on the fly if you have trouble seeing or hearing what is going down. James will be emailing out a link before the meeting for those who stream. For you tech savvy people out there, the Community Center does not have wi fi so James will be streaming from a "hot spot". Thank you James for the use of your system for this. We have been informed that a couple users of the Community Center have asked the City for wi fi so that may happen in the future. See ya tomorrow, either in person or virtually. 9AM virtually, 8AM in person to help set up. Please bring your Instant Gallery piece(s) or have them ready to stream, we want to see what you have been doing in the round and brown realm. I make small side grain boxes (3.5") and start and finish 3 in an hour. I can also show how I do weed pots, also 3 an hour. They are not hard once you know a few tips. At the last meeting it was mentioned that a round robin would be great for early 2022. For those of you who are new, a CRW round robin is an event where we have several members demonstrating a topic of interest at the same time and the membership floats from station to station watching and possibly getting their hands on a tool to practice whatever is being taught. In the past we have done round robin demos on many topics: sharpening, vacuum chucks, pen making, pen finishing, CA finishing, shear scraping and many other things. The round robins are fun for the demonstrator and the members as well. (The round robins are not a full fledged demo where one demonstrator talks ands turns for two hours, from start to end on a topic. I am working on some of those for 2022 as well.) And we do not pay for round robins like we pay for regular demos. So if you have a topic you want to introduce to the club, just maybe you could volunteer for a round robin. (I won't turn you away if you have a full topic you want to demo either.) Let me know. Topics are limited only by your imagination and relevance to woodturning. (No demos on brazing with an acetylene torch for example.) So remember, holler if you have something. John -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Doesn?t apply to my Inca ? it?s completely properly enclosed. In thinking about this some more, there are some potential issues that aren?t obvious. * Blade Size ? this could be worse if you are using a big, wide resawing blade and run it with the gullets off the front of the wheel. * Setup ? some machines are finicky as to the co-planarity [or lack of same] of the blades. In his books, Mark Duginske expounds on this at length. It?s possible that setup error could move the locus of blade travel towards the operator to where fingers can be endangered on machines with open blade slots. * Damage ? If the wheel shaft is mislocated [due to running with excessive blade tension], the blade band can also be too far towards the operator. Tape over that slot is OK, temporarily. I?d go with something a little more substantial. Former member of CRW Dave Dapkus did this with the Grizzly he had, using his sheet metal skills.
