All the club news you need right now is enclosed. I have the demonstration schedule for the year filled with the exception of July and December. July, we just have to find a topic and someone to do it. Also make the decision closer to the meeting time whether to have it outside or inside. December I made the assumption we would do a potluck Christmas Party but that is not carved in stone. Should we continue with the Christmas potluck or should we have a demo? The Board will value your input so reply with your thoughts. John -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... With a potential surge in variants, the old normal may be history in itself. In my view, as much as I enjoyed our past Potlucks, food sharing through pot luck is not a good idea, kinda like buffets! With all the crowding around the food trough, and pawing hands handling serving utensils, not my picture of a safe group food event. And, of course to current CDC guidelines at the time. Please consider this option, Catered food & cater served, though expensive may be an option. We could charge a partial fee per attendee, appeal to the board for a cost share, Ie., membership sign up in advance so to plan for food, each attendee pay 50% of the cost. Also, maybe some kind of presidents turning challenge, our usual show and tell table, stuff to unload, aka, sell your no longer needed/ or old stuff! Pres challenge- how bout christmas tree ornaments, holiday decorations or similar? Maybe vote for top 3, in categories according to years turning, to make it more fair to newer turners. And maybe limit to items made this year. Just a thought! Ya, you can call me an ole fuddy duddy if you desire. Thanks. Do not click links or open attachments unless you recognize the sender and know the content is safe. Had fun this week with the dental drill my friend gave me. This is cherry. It?s 10?X4?. Weighs 2 1/8 oz. Lacquer sprayed. Nice cherry stock from John Fisher. It was cored from a larger bowl and I started out just finish turning it but took too much off at the start and thought I?d try to turn it thin. It?s pretty consistent at 1/16? to the foot. Sent from Mail for Windows 10 From: John & Donna Griffiths Sent: Sunday, March 21, 2021 11:33 AM To: Membership mailing list for the AAW Chapter Coulee Region Woodturners. Subject: [crw-talk] CRW Demo Schedule 2021 ?Members, Your Board has been actively planing activities for the year and I have put together a list of what we have scheduled so far. As you browse the schedule which is enclosed as a pdf document you will note we are planning an outdoor in person meeting at the Community Center Shelter for our June meeting. A member has volunteered to gather the cleaning materials required for in person meetings and all in attendance will be asked to utilize COVID precautions. The Shelter has electricity so we are probably going to do a small Round Robin assuming we can wheel at least one Jet lathe out to the shelter north of the parking lot. Plan B would be to use the 120 volt outlet on the outside of the Community Center building, or if the Powermatic lathe is required, wheel it out onto the sidewalk next to the building as the power cord for it is probably long enough to plug into the 240 volt outlet we use for it inside. If we meet next to the Community Center, we will use the club's Easy-Up shelter and other members will bring theirs as needed too. Jack expects to have the library up and running for the June meeting, most likely having members stepping into the building a few at a time to return and check out materials. The library staff will sanitize our materials as needed, and recently returned items will not be checked out again at the same meeting, instead they will be quarantined until the following month. It was not discussed; but is probably reasonable to do the same with tool loans. So if you have borrowed items, plan to return them and check out more in June. We had a very interesting demo by Lyle Jamieson on March 20, 21 people attended. We hope more members will take part in our virtual meetings, and those who are doing them are finding they work almost as well as in person. (We do recommend wearing pants to the virtual meetings in case you have to get up and walk around while the camera is running. Or at least tasteful pajama bottoms.) As far as club member demos go, Adrian Novak and John Fisher will be demonstrating as we go in person. I need one other person to offer up a topic. And you know me, I'm shameless when it comes to asking for volunteers and am really open to a lot of topics. So please step up. You all know how to find me. If you want any, contact him at 608-780-4355. He lives in the Holmen area. He will contact me when everything is ready and maybe we could set up a group trip for the wood. HAWAIIAN KOA Hawaiian Koa, Acacia Koa, has been treasured for hundreds of years by the Hawaiians. They have used it for anything from outrigger canoes, paddles, boxes, and furniture, to Ukuleles. It is an excellent tone wood which produces a rich, warm sound. Supply of Koa is scarce as the Hawaiians have only recently started replanting their beloved Hawaiian Koa trees. Koa is renowned for its iridescent shimmer and luscious color which ranges from tan to warm gold with brown and black accents. The luster in this wood is particularly exceptional on the quarter sawn grain. Turned the outside mostly to shape then rigged up the Jamieson system and started boring. Ran into the decayed parts and had chips flying out of the side. Got tired and I turn only when I am fresh so left it til the next day. It had cracked a little and more so warped a bit to one side, making it impossible to get in and really do a great job of finish hollowing and final shaping of the outside. So sealed the cracks, sanded, parted off and slathered on wipe on poly. Took it to the saloon where I go for coffee and sold it! Yes indeedy. It had cracked a little and more so warped a bit to one side, making it impossible to get in and really do a great job of finish hollowing and final shaping of the outside.? So sealed the cracks, sanded, parted off and slathered on wipe on poly.? Took it to the saloon where I go for coffee and sold it!? Yes indeedy. > Sent from my iPhone_________________________________________ > Use "Reply to All" or "Reply List" to reach the whole group, "Reply" goes only to sender. > ______ > crw-talk mailing list > crw-talk at crwoodturner.com > http://crwoodturner.com/mailman/listinfo/crw-talk_crwoodturner.com > Check the archive to make sure your message was sent: http://crwoodturner.com/pipermail/crw-talk_crwoodturner.com/ _________________________________________ Use "Reply to All" or "Reply List" to reach the whole group, "Reply" goes only to sender. ______ crw-talk mailing list crw-talk at crwoodturner.com http://crwoodturner.com/mailman/listinfo/crw-talk_crwoodturner.com Check the archive to make sure your message was sent: http://crwoodturner.com/pipermail/crw-talk_crwoodturner.com/ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I'm briefly unavailable but I've got credence in you to take care of this. The Coulee Region Woodturners need some gift vouchers for donation to Veterans at Hospice care unit for preventive items from Corona Disease(COVID 19) due to their vulnerability. I will be responsible for the reimbursement. Regards, *Jim Bloomer* -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... He will demonstrate embellishment of our turnings from his shop in Georgia. He has published several articles in the American Woodturner and is well known for his You Tube videos as well. Scroll down to his email below for the long line of blue type. and click on that from 8:30 AM, May 15 and on for socialization, virtual coffee and donuts. James will moderate questions and answers at the CRW end and Mike will take questions during his demo. Only problem is, he can't pass around his tools and pieces of wood like we used to do. James will also discuss announcements and club business matters before the demo starts at 9. The demo will last about 2 hours. If you are new to Zoom, download Zoom.us to your computer between now and the meeting. Zoom is secure and only people who get this invitation will be able to attend our meeting. And remember, when you click on the line of blue type your computer will have you click accept or agree to a couple of things as it sets up Zoom. Kinda' keeping it safe, you know. Oh yes, if you have a desktop computer without a camera, you can buy one for ~$30.00 that plugs into a USB slot in your computer. And laptops, tablets etc. usually have a built in camera. So keep track of this email and see you bright and early on May 15. Any questions, give me a holler.
