John
I never get any pictures when you send an e-mail. All I get is dark print and within it something about member monthly check.

On hook tools -
Some of you remember...I'm the guy that assisted all who wanted one on Tool Day, way back when.
The rough grinding, the forging/bending, the hardening, the sharpening, and the tempering are all things that you/we can do in our shop PROVIDED you start with O1 tool steel.
I'd be happy to revive this, since, as John can attest, nothing hollows out end grain faster, better, cleaner than a sharp hook tool.
It has a learning curve, but it's fun learning. After all, it's just a piece of wood.
There are caveats, of course:
* Must be sharp [Duh]
* Must be end grain! Disaster awaits if you try to use it on anything else [like the inside of a crossgrain bowl].
Stay safe, but stay busy.

Indeed, there is a bit of finesse required but not a lot. You are
working on an open mouthed space, it tapers to large at the mouth. They
won't do hollow forms, you can't get the cutter in at the right angle
for a cut. They have to be really sharp. You can kind of cut with a
kind of dull gouge but not with the hook. Most of us love a really nice
trail of shavings flying off the tool, and the hook tool gives that.
When it is cutting well, the shavings are long and thick so wouldn't
blow out of a small hole with compressed air either.
I would volunteer to do a club demo when it is safe for us to meet.
(Board members, are you listening?)
The hook tool making demo was before my time. My efforts to build one
failed, should have annealed the steel after hardening, so I bought one
on line and built a shaft and handle to mount it.

>> Members, I am sending a few photos of a yarn bowl I recently made of a cherry log. It is about 6" diameter at the top and perhaps 6" tall. I turned it in spindle orientation and hollowed mostly with a hook tool, then finished up with a negative rake scraper. Cut the "J" shaped hole for yarn with a Forstner bit in a hand drill and a saber saw then finished with spray-on Polycrylic brand finish. I am going to TRY to send a seperate brief video of me using the hook tool to make a walnut yarn bowl that is currently in the process of finish application.
