On hook tools -
Some of you remember...I'm the guy that assisted all who wanted one on Tool
Day, way back when.
The rough grinding, the forging/bending, the hardening, the sharpening, and
the tempering are all things that you/we can do in our shop PROVIDED you
start with O1 tool steel.
I'd be happy to revive this, since, as John can attest, nothing hollows out
end grain faster, better, cleaner than a sharp hook tool.
It has a learning curve, but it's fun learning. After all, it's just a
piece of wood.
There are caveats, of course:
- Must be sharp [Duh]
- Must be end grain! Disaster awaits if you try to use it on anything
else [like the inside of a crossgrain bowl].
Stay safe, but stay busy.
