Members,

I just got an email from Julie at Norskedalen asking us to put together
a short, like a couple of minutes long, video of someone turning and
discussing the process and the finished product.  Read her note below.

Well, that would take more than a couple of minutes most likely; but it
is something a few of us could put together while still being safe in
terms of distancing, masks and so on.  Probably a spindle project as
they are often quicker than a cross grain one such as a bowl.

So, my thinking so far about doing it:

1,  Have the turner be someone who has their lathe in the center of the
shop, not against a wall like mine is, so the video person may stand
across the lathe to shoot.

2,  Have someone who is a pretty good teacher, one that can boil a
simple project down to a few minutes.

3,  A cell phone camera would enable us to ship the video to them easily
via email or text message.  Or we could use a regular camera and mail
the SD card with the video on it to them to handle however they want.

4,  I can do that much, be the camera guy, hold the camera and stay
quiet.  I can write better than I can turn and talk so someone else
should do the turning.  I am clueless when it comes to editing any video.

5,  We could do a second brief video that would be an Instant Gallery
with 4-6 pieces.  Video cam guy/gal could shoot while the narrator holds
up a piece and speaks for say one minute about the piece.  ("This
natural edge bowl is made of walnut and the bark was intact, the grain
runs so and so the maker did whatever in terms of design...")  And on
the the next piece.  Not a lot of technical gibberish we like to talk
about, just a few facts that would interest non-turners.

So, volunteers?  We would need a shop where the video could be shot with
access around the lathe  and decent lighting.  There are turners in the
club that are good at turning and speaking at the same time.  There are
also members who are better in the technical part of filming than I.
There are surely members who might have a better idea than mine.  So
please volunteer, I'll coordinate and help.

Thanks, John

Hello, John,
Hope you are enjoying this beautiful sunny day! Days like this help us
get through the reality of the world.

With the crazy world as it is, Norskedalen is planning a virtual
Midsummer Fest. It’ll be different than before but that’s the way of the
world these days.
We are putting together a series of video offerings similar to what we
would have had live at the event. We are wondering if you or anyone in
your group has or would be willing to put together a short video on
woodturning. It would only have to be a couple of minutes long. It would
be great if someone would explain the history, how it’s done, show some
of the process, and then the finished piece. Do you think anyone would
in interested in doing that?

Please let me know what you think.

Thank you, and enjoy your week-end!

Kindly,
Julie
