From griff at mwt.net Wed Jul 1 10:39:27 2020 From: griff at mwt.net (Mwt) Date: Wed, 1 Jul 2020 10:39:27 -0500 Subject: [crw-talk] Spurtlizing and Dibbling around Message-ID: Hello members, Can?t say I have not been up to no good at all! Someone added to my pile of wood with some walnut limbs with a relatively small diameter of heartwood, with the heartwood being maybe 3/8 or 1/2 the overall diameter. Not very desirable at first then it occurred to me to incorporate the sapwood/ heartwood contrast into turnings. So check out these spurtles and the dibble second from the left for interesting color contrast. The dibble on the left is...(drum roll here) redbud. We had a branch on our redbud tree die over winter and I had no clue what it would look like, but it is very pretty wood. No, it won?t replace cherry and walnut but it is quite attractive. Those of you who have read the most recent American Woodturner may have noticed the article about a segmented bowl made of branches cut into segments with the end grain facing out. Much of the walnut I was given has had preliminary milling done for such a bowl and I have the preliminary milling done and the rough segments are drying in bags. Mid July I plan to finish that project, if the wood permits. Stay safe my friends and tighten up your Covid prevention habits as it is in the rampage in LaX County and Winona County. Still a low count up here in Buffalo but that could change in a heartbeat. John -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... It?ll be different than before but that?s the way of the world these days. We are putting together a series of video offerings similar to what we would have had live at the event. We are wondering if you or anyone in your group has or would be willing to put together a short video on woodturning. It would only have to be a couple of minutes long. It would be great if someone would explain the history, how it?s done, show some of the process, and then the finished piece. Do you think anyone would in interested in doing that? First, South Lanes (south side of La Cross) is quitting the business and selling everything thru the end of July. They are cutting up the lanes and approaches a nd selling them for $25/ft. These are typically 42" wide and they will cut to whatever width. The wood is either hard maple or pine and is 2 1/4" thick. They also have bowling pins, depending on the age from $5-$20 each. All pins ae laminated hard maple. Some nice wood, once you get thru the vinyl outside. Some really nice wood if you are looking to make a table, bench top, counter up, etc. The 2 1/4" thickness make some great bowl blanks. Stop down and see what they have. Also, one of the owners at South Lanes just cut down a big maple tree and has it blocked into managable lengths. They are looking to get rid of the wood. Call Jackie Topel at 608-769-2509. She is at W884 E. Mohawk Lane in Stoddard. Should be no chain saws required. Lastly, a prior member and student has an ornamental cherry tree she wants down. She said she would be willing have the tree dropped if we want to get the wood. She live in the Cass Street area of La Crosse. Perhaps I'm showing my age here, but having recently returned to the Midwest, I don't even know his status. He incorporated some features that made it very useful for either application, starting with a utilities trench for power and dust collection in the middle of the room. Also provisions for spray booth and the exhaust fan on an outside wall. Don't forget an auxiliary electrical panel and distribution for both 230v and 115v outlets. My BIG Delta 2 hp lathe will not be going with us.. It is for sale for $1,400.00. I am putting it on Craig?s list for more than that, but to members who I have enjoyed being with the past several years, it will be cheaper. Due to the size of the photos, I am sending out two E-mails with 2 attachments each. Please call me at 507-273-0019 for more information. The lathe is in my shop in Money Creek, MN. Money Creek is a suburb of Houston, MN, but that is really abusing the term ?suburb?. I think the pictures will give you an idea of what this beast can do. So I pass the time as any self respecting turner would if they have time: making pieces of wood round. I was given some very wet walnut limbs. Much of them was made into segments with the grain facing out. The design in shots 3&4 is not my best design but I used walnut and oak to make a yarn bowl. I dried the walnut in the microwave till I cooked about 30% of the weight away before the final sawing to size. The first two shots are a winged/natural edge bowl soaked in DNA and dried in a paper bag for three weeks. Please keep posting photos of your work on this page for the benefit of the club . Be sure to tell the story of each piece too. That?s how it is interesting, thanks for looking, John -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed...
