[crw-talk] vacuum pump for lathe and casting

Kris, Several years ago I bought one of those "Frugal Woodturner" vacuum
systems, had to assemble it and it works like a champ. By assembling I
mean I had to figure out a way to get the components organized and put
in place. That is not rocket science. (I mounted mine on a piece of
2x8 with a 1x8 vertical board to hold the filter and guage and a hanger
for the cord and hose with some small casters so I can roll it around.)
I built three chucks using threaded lamp tube, PVC pipe couplings (2",
3" and 4"), some bearings and some wood. Instructions were provided.
It drew about 22" vacuum. I decided I needed more vacuum so bought some
replacement parts for the pump mechanism on eBay which put me up to 26"
vacuum. The pumps are from old oxygen machines that people with COPD
use. Mine works nicely and I use it for most every bowl I make. I
thought through the design and consulted with the late Greg Haugen, then
assembly and pump overhaul were just challenges that I enjoyed. Go to
frugalwoodturner.com , I think the guy is still around. John
