From marine9096 at gmail.com Wed Dec 2 13:58:05 2020 From: marine9096 at gmail.com (James Bloomer) Date: Wed, 2 Dec 2020 13:58:05 -0600 Subject: [crw-talk] Welcome Message-ID: Good Afternoon Molly, I am Jim Bloomer, current president. Duane forwarded on your email about an interest to become part of our merry band. For emails Ken Grunke is our webmaster/keeper of the list which is why I did the CRWtalk email as well. So that he can add you to our distribution list. We use the email to make announcements, as well as share any works with the rest of the members(something that has been happening quite a bit with the current situation). We also have a facebook page, its currently in its infancy. If you search for Coulee region Woodturners and select the one that is a patch on a bed of shavings...thats it. Many memebers do not have facebook, which is fine, its just another way to share your works with others online. We also have an instagram under the same name. Last but not least there is our web page at https://www.crwoodturner.com/index.shtml this gives general informationa s well as helpful tutorials created by our memebers over time. Membership comes in two forms, paying and non-paying. You are welcome to come to the meetings and enjoy the demos and information and fellowship with others of the craft. Paying memebership add the benefit of the lending library and the loaner tools. Paying members can sign out library items and tools from the tool cribe from meeting to meeting. (about a month) the list of tools is on the website. We will also hold demos from professional turners, usually a general demo and then a deep dive for paying members. Another reccommended membership is AAW Amercan Association of Woodturners They are located in the cities. They are the sposor organisation for our club and they also have large events during the year. Always worth a look. As I mentioned in the Zoom meeting we are waiving member due for 2021 but will welcome donations to help up cover operating costs as well as fund improvement projuects for the club(we are looking at upgrading the sound and video system we use for meetings. in closing if there are any questions, concerns or general sharing feel free to hit the CRW talk email. You will get an answer back pretty quickly or feel free to email me at marine9096 at gmail.com. Apoligies for the length ...its a large chunk of info. In Service -- James A. To that end, I realize my table saw is taking up a lot of room I could for a class lathe. Therefore, I am putting my table saw up for sale to make room in my shop. The table saw is a Delta 10" Contractor's Saw (model 34-444). It has a 32" wide (I think) table to the right of the blade and can handle a sheet of plywood. It also has the leg set and wheel package. To the left of the blade, I have added a cast iron router table (router not included). I also upgraded the fence to a Biesmeyer fence system. The saw has seen a lot of use, but is in good shape. I am asking $300 for the package. Also, in making room in my shop, I have a Jet Drum Sander (model 10-20 Plus). This is a very nice thicknessing sander with a variable speed feed belt. The sander does not have the stand accessory. I bought the sander to sand ring for segmented turning. I have not done much segmenting, so the sander is just taking up space. I would say the sander has maybe 20 hours of service (brand new condition). I am asking $400 for the sander. Contact me if you are interested in the table saw or sander or both. You can reach me at 608-397-9526 or e-mail me at wisawdust at charter.net. Thanks Duane -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Beautiful work. It took me a while to figure out the cut too, I ended up using a Forstner bit to bore the hole and some free hand drawing of the slot then cutting it out with a saber saw, both while the piece is mounted on the lathe and the spindle locked. Some chipping is almost inevitable. The American Woodturner magazine had an article about yarn bowls several years ago but I have not re-read it. Just faked it. I have not made one in bowl orientation, I have made them with a log in spindle orientation then hollow out end grain with a hook tool. Using a hook tool is about the most fulfilling kind of turning there is if you like big streams of chips flying. I sell them, at craft shows and on Etsy, customers snap them up. I made a segmented one but it did not turn out well. Next step is to make her a turned wooden crochet hook. A fun spindle project, the tricky part is getting the hook cut into the end. I use a hacksaw and just sort of hand hold it, then whittle and sand a bit. By assembling I mean I had to figure out a way to get the components organized and put in place. That is not rocket science. (I mounted mine on a piece of 2x8 with a 1x8 vertical board to hold the filter and guage and a hanger for the cord and hose with some small casters so I can roll it around.) I built three chucks using threaded lamp tube, PVC pipe couplings (2", 3" and 4"), some bearings and some wood. Instructions were provided. It drew about 22" vacuum. I decided I needed more vacuum so bought some replacement parts for the pump mechanism on eBay which put me up to 26" vacuum. The pumps are from old oxygen machines that people with COPD use. Mine works nicely and I use it for most every bowl I make. I thought through the design and consulted with the late Greg Haugen, then assembly and pump overhaul were just challenges that I enjoyed. Go to frugalwoodturner.com , I think the guy is still around. We will have a number of virtual club meetings and demonstrations starting in January, starting with a former member who has returned to the area, Aaron Gesicki. He intends to rejoin the club and will present a virtual demo. He has asked us to poll the membership about which topics we would like to have him discuss. He is an engineer with knowledge of metallurgy and a skilled turner as well. Please open the attachment 2021 Woodturner's Presentation Checklist.pdf and let us know what particular topics you would like to have him discuss. The meeting will be presented on Zoom, with a business meeting, the demo, socialization prior to the meeting and instant gallery. Specific information on using Zoom to follow. Our February meeting will also be via Zoom. We are considering another member demo, this one from the Bloomer family shop on using 3D printing in conjunction with turning to create unusual pieces. March, the club is bringing in Lyle Jamieson, a professional turner. He will do a 2 1/2 hour demonstration on creating hollow forms. It will be via Zoom, open to club members for free and has questions and answers built in to his presentation. He and James will handle the technical matters to make this work. Mr. Jamieson is a well known professional who has perfected the art of creating beautiful hollow pieces. He is a strong advocate of his system using a captured boring bar but his teachings will guide all of us in our quest for the perfect hollow form. April will be another masterwork from the Bloomer family shop, featuring Ashley Bloomer and her molded plastic pen blanks and pens. Again, via Zoom. May will take us on a virtual trip to the Peachtree State. Mike Peace will demonstrate. He is a well known turner, very active on YouTube.com and the board is considering a topic for him to discuss. Folks, Zoom is a useful technology that some find intimidating. We want everyone to be able utilize this for our club activities as we await those pokes in the arm that will enable us to eventually become able to meet in person. We intend to use Zoom to enable both the pre-meeting socialization we all enjoy as well as the business, demos and instant gallery that make our club worthwhile. It seems intimidating but as a certified old goat, even I have managed to make it work. Basically, the meeting host, who is the person controlling the Zoom meeting, will send out an email sometime prior to the meeting. That email has a long line of blue colored print. Click on that line of print a few minutes before the meeting is to start. Then in a moment it will ask you if you want to open Zoom Client, click "yes". It will probably ask one or two other questions about opening something or other, click yes. Have your sound turned on. You will need a computer with a camera and microphone. I believe most or all laptops have them. I use a desktop so bought a webcam a few months ago for about $30.00 that perches on top of the monitor and plugs into a USB slot in the box. You may have to click on something to turn the camera and microphone on. When the system loads you will see a large screen view of whoever is speaking and small pictures of others attending the meeting. Please try to figure this out and ask whatever questions you have beforehand. James Bloomer is the club's Zoom guru who will take questions and will assist you in getting up and running so you can attend meetings with the least amount of frustration. Please remember to open Aaron's Woodturner's Presentation Checklist above and list the topics you would have an interest in him discussing in a reply email. Thanks for bearing through this lengthly email and Happy New Year, John Note: To protect against computer viruses, e-mail programs may prevent sending or receiving certain types of file attachments. Very thoughtful comments & much appreciated. Good choices for zoom demos, Aaron,? Peace, Jamieson & the Bloomer family.? All will be a treat, indeed. And, thanks to the CRW board for coming together on this for the membership. For sure, this Covid thing will be with us for some time yet. The arm shots will help indeed, but not an immediate magic bullet. Welcome back, Aaron. I'll check the pdf soon. Thank you, again. It will turn about a 36" spindle, a 12" bowl (but I am not sure I would do that.) It is a starter lathe, belt driven variable speed. It is solid and in really good condition. It is 28 years old but lightly used. Purchased locally at Aline. I am thinking about $200 with all original accessories plus a set of 8 turning tools.
