I think that is a wise decision in these times. Normally, about this time of the month, I would be asking members for contributions for the newsletter, but since we have not met recently, and won't meet for the next couple months, I am putting the newsletter on temporary furlough. Luckily, we have this forum to keep in touch, and we all probably have a little spare time to work on projects, so take some pictures and post them here on CRW-TALK. To lead off, I'm including a tutorial I created for a friend. Enjoy! I would recommend using something like webex or gotomeeting instead. Webex is currently offering free meetings for up to 50 people for a max of 40 min (more people or more time would be a paid subscription), but they are a more reputable company/service. More information here: https://www.webex.com/free-video-conferencing.html. I use GoToMeeting for work all the time, but I've used Webex in the past - both good, reputable services. Sort of an instant gallery, only on a towel laid on a retaining wall of the patio. This is an oak and walnut flask, finished with many coats of wipe on polyurethane and hand waxed with a beeswax/mineral oil/pumice concoction I learned about on the internet. Your proportions on the main piece and on the finial are very pleasing. It looks like you used the Golden Ratio of 1.61803399:1. As you make even more delicate finials, remember to always work from the tail stock to the head stock, including the sanding, to avoid breaking a very fine upper portion of the finial due to slight vibrations. Keep turning. You have a gift for art. Message-ID: <5A6E5403-06E2-47AF-A3FF-7FCF73FA5A30@mwt.net> Hello CRW friends, not everything I turn is an unqualified success. A week or so ago I found this piece of mulberry in my wood stash because I was going to be the next Lyle Jamison! Or so I thought. Well, the piece turned out nicely as I first cut the outside shape then hollowed it with my homemade Jamison system then used a couple of other hollowing tools I got from club members, Ken Grunke and Jim Frank to get the inside nice and smooth. Then I refined the outside surface, cut a tenon for later mounting and parted it off from the faceplate. Lastly I put a few coats of oil finish on the outside and inside to slow the drying and set it aside. Well, the photos tell the story! Should?ve nuked it I guess. Or left it thicker. Or soaked in DNA. So now it is well ventilated, or should I say, air conditioned. Just like the old joke about the guy who told his buddy that his hot rod car had 4-60 air conditioning, open all four windows and drive 60 miles per hour! Last night his nephew, my neighbor, informed me of his passing and wanted the club to know of the loss of one of our woodturning friends. Services will be planned for a later date. His obituary has been included with this note. I will remember Virgil as a friend and always enjoyed conversations with him at meetings. His obituary states he loved making bowls. I have been making a natural edge maple bowl today and in my mind, will dedicate it to Virgil. > > John > > https://www.hofffuneral.com/obituary/378920/Virgil-I.-Mehus/obituary-services/ > > > > _________________________________________ > Use "Reply to All" or "Reply List" to reach the whole group, "Reply" goes only to sender. > ______ > crw-talk mailing list > crw-talk at crwoodturner.com > http://crwoodturner.com/mailman/listinfo/crw-talk_crwoodturner.com > Check the archive to make sure your message was sent: http://crwoodturner.com/pipermail/crw-talk_crwoodturner.com/ From rjpatros05 at gmail.com Sat Apr 25 17:24:09 2020 From: rjpatros05 at gmail.com (Robert Patros) Date: Sat, 25 Apr 2020 17:24:09 -0500 Subject: [crw-talk] What I have been up to during the lockdown In-Reply-To: <4529CF51-78C9-4B46-AB48-DBF77D6A7E86@mwt.net> References: <4529CF51-78C9-4B46-AB48-DBF77D6A7E86@mwt.net> Message-ID: <33AADB81-3335-4E91-8FE0-69841DA8531B@gmail.com> Very nice, John!
