Dan wanted me to pass this along for Saterday.: Flute Making As one of the November-meeting demonstrations, I will be showing some aspects of making wooden flutes. This will be an opportunity to learn about the parts of the flute, including the sizing and placement of each part. If you have one of the flute blanks provided by Joe Hemmerich a few years ago, you may want to bring the following items to the meeting. We can work on the windway of your flute, share information, and/or learn a bit about playing this wonderful instrument. The sessions are only twenty minutes long, but you can work on your flute for more than one session if you like. Flute Blank from Joe or your own creationA copy of Joe’s flute-making instructions These are on the CRW website under the How To tab.Wooden block with at least one Very Flat surface. Approximate size: L 2 ½” X W 1” X H ½” This piece fits above the windway holes and is often referred to as the bird or fetish of the flute.¼ inch chisel Yes, it should be a very sharp tool.Adjustable square A small one is best.A tape measure Several rubber bands large enough to hold the two halves of the flute blank together, tightly.Sand Paper Small pieces of 220 grit to 400 grit are good I will bring several other items that I find useful in making flutes. Most of these items are very inexpensive. You could buy and make all of them, plus the parts of the flute, for about one half the cost of just one good wooden flute. If you want some information about the history, making, tuning, and playing of wooden flutes, look on the internet for the following links: http://flutopedia.com and http://flutopedia.com/xls/FluteSheet3.1.xls. The second link will help you determine the sizing and placement of the holes for your flute. The instructions may seem daunting, but I can give you answers to most of your questions. Some of the answers will even be correct. Dan Wilson
