[Crw-talk] Wondering what I did wrong

Members, I have a question/problem.  I made a small natural edge bowl out of some box elder that had some punky wood, power sanded from 60 grit to 800 grit then put on some homemade "Danish Oil".

The oil brought out the dark stains in the end grain as you can see in the photo below.My question is, how can I prevent that?  It caused dark smudges that really detract from the beauty of the piece.

Any ideas/suggestions to prevent that are welcome.
