> ALAN LACER has been involved in the turning field for more than 40 years as a turner, teacher, demonstrator, writer, exhibition coordinator, expert witness, and past president of the AAW. His work has appeared in a number of regional and national shows and exhibitions. As a demonstrator and instructor, he has appeared in all 50 states and five foreign countries. His writings (over 150 published articles, tips or columns) have covered technical aspects of woodturning and finishing, numerous specific projects, the history of woodturning and the turning traditions of Japan and Germany. He has published one book with another near completion. Alan has also produced five videos on his own, with three of them winning a total of five national awards. In 1999, the AAW selected him for their Lifetime Honorary Member Award for his contributions to the field. He was a regular writer for American Woodworker and American Woodturner publications. He has also appeared on the DIY network and the PBS program The Woodturner's Workshop.

> Demonstration Information
> March 4, 2017
> 9:00am-4:00pm
> In this session Alan will cover a variety of topics. First will be the skew chisel: how to shape it, sharpen and perform a number of different cuts. As sharpness is one of the most critical aspects of using this tool, plenty will be covered regarding the sharpening of woodturning tools. From there Alan will explore the making of end-grain objects and the challenges of hollowing end-grain. He will show a variety of methods, but concentrate on using hook-type tools and shear scraping. As part of this presentation he will make a basic hook tool. Following that he will be making a turned lidded box using the hook tool.

> March 5, 2017
> 9:00am-4:00pm
> In this session Alan will take the participants through the process of refining and sharpening the skew and preparing the lathe to be more friendly for skew work. From there the class will focus on at least six different cuts with this amazing tool. Homework will be assigned in order to apply the techniques learned to specific projects. A major thrust of the class is to overcome any fears students may have of this tool.
