I agree with Ken. There a few steps you can try before you apply the finish. Caution: My advice is free, but it is sometimes worth less than it costs.

Use a tool that is not a scraper tool to turn the final steps before sanding. Scrapers like the Easy Wood tools drag the dark wood fibers into the light wood. Cutting tools do not.

Vacuum the piece after the initial sanding before applying any finish or sanding sealer. Stop the lathe to prevent melting the bristles of the brush. What brush? Use a soft brush on the vacuum to loosen the dust particles. This may sound silly, but the finish makes the dust particles darker and produces a blotchy or smeared effect. The brushing and vacuuming helps remove the particles that are not visible when the wood is raw.

Now you are ready to follow the steps Ken recommended. Remember to apply the first coat of finish with the lathe stopped. If you sand between coats, be very careful to avoid sanding back to the raw wood.

I have a suggestion that seems to work for me. After sanding, apply one coat of shellac, applying from the bark to the bottom with the lathe still.. This shellac should be thin enough so it does not build up on the surface. This will seal the wood so the oil does not transfer color. I then polish this with burlap or similar tough cloth. After that apply the oil in the same manner, polishing with a soft cloth. That's it. Good Luck! KC

Hello all,

I have a dilemma with finishing walnut without staining the sapwood an ugly brownish color. I have made some natural edge and a hollow form pieces out of wet walnut, I end up with a very nice contrast between the very light sapwood and brown heartwood; but then when I apply finish the sapwood gets brownish stains, some of which seem to be a result of heartwood dust ground into the sapwood in the area of the end grain but as the finish cures the sapwood becomes more brownish, splotchy and less attractive.

I have been using the homemade oil finish consisting of poly, mineral spirits and boiled linseed oil. I have been power sanding on the lathe to 800 grit.

I am looking for suggestions: A different material or technique for the finish? Different sanding methods? ??? Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thank you.

John
