Hello all, this came across my desk this week as part of a blog on chemical
safety. I found the original article from abc news. Here's the link:
http://abcnews.go.com/US/officials-warn-spontaneous-combustion-risk-linseed-oil-common/story?id=40788665
Those who work with linseed oil or other oil-based stains should be aware
of this hazard. Oxidation of the oil on exposure to air (in rags, for
example) causes the temp to rise high enough to burn. My dad told me about
this when I was a kid. He said the rags had to be sealed inside a can
where air couldn't enter, to prevent fire. It looks like the advice is
still the same on that.
Have fun and be safe.
