[Crw-talk] finishing pine

Jack, I use a Gel Stain whenever I stain pine.  I don't seem to get the blotchy look that oil based stains give.  Give it a try on a scrap piece of pine. I don't use a sealer anymore to prep pine before staining.
If you want to use a grain sealer though, you can create a wash with a 50:50 ratio of water and carpenters glue (I recommend Franklin's Titebond II). This keeps the stain from soaking into the wood as deep and helps eliminate the blotch...but the stain will be lighter since it can't soak into the wood.  This is a good solution on endgrain though to help keep it from being darker than the board surface.

It was old and the old finish has been stripped off.
What should be done before restraining?
