Attention all you intrepid Wood Scroungers,
At the January meeting I asked if anyone would be interested in coming to
Black River Falls to help cut and collect some cherry burls for their use. I
am still waiting for "official" confirmation to go ahead with the project
which is on state land, and I expect that soon. A number of you had some
interest, and I will keep you posted on any updates.
Along with the cherry burls I also have located 10 to 12 Red Cedar trees on
private land near Black River Falls which I have permission to harvest. Some
are big enough to justify bringing in a portable saw mill to produce some
lumber, and there is also plenty of "turnable" stock to be had from the
smaller parts of the trees. This will probably involve a couple days work -
one to get the trees on the ground, limbed, and cut into sawmill length or
rough turning stock and coated with Anchor Seal, and another to get the logs
sliced into lumber. A local portable sawmill operator charges $65 per hour
to do the cutting, and says he can do up to 300 board feet per hour,
somewhat less with smaller trees.
The only cost for the cherry will be your time and gas, and some sweat to do
the cutting and hauling. There will be a small fee ($15 - $20) for the
cutting permit which I think we can split between the participants. I will
bring some Anchor Seal for the wood, if you have some too, please bring it.
For the cedar, there is no cost for the turning wood beyond your time, gas,
and sweat. If you are interested in any of the lumber I think it would be
fair to divide the cutting cost proportionally among those who take the
lumber. It will need to be dried before use, either in a kiln or by stacking
and air drying for some time. I'm told there are some Amish mills around
that will kiln dry wood for a charge, but I have not contacted any of them.
You may know of others as well.
The cedar needs to be cut and removed before mid April, as the property is
being sold. I would like to get the cherry burls out before that time too,
to avoid conflicts with turkey hunting (mine and anyone using the property
where the cherry is).
Please let me know as soon as you can if you would like to be part of either
or both of these adventures.
