I am glad you did not suffer a serious injury. Thank you for sharing this story. We all make mistakes. I have found whenever I become complacent in our shop, something bad is about to happen. It is so easy to become distracted and forget basic safety rules.

Here are a few safety rules to remember:
Use safety guards, riving knives, push sticks, feather boards, face shields, dust masks, dust collectors, and other safety equipment.
Make sure your hand tools and power tools are in good working order.
Take your time. Haste makes waste and injuries.
Quit working/playing before you become tired.
If you say to yourself, “I’m sure it will be alright just this once.”, it probably won’t.
Avoid unnecessary risks.
Remember, woodworking and woodturning are supposed to be fun.

Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Subject: [Crw-talk] Why safety rules exist

Hello all,

Safety is always or should always be a concern when working with any tools. One mantra o have always lived by is a dull tool is dangerous. In my case I knew that my band saw blade was extremely dull and had to be replaced. But instead I kept using it. Well last weekend I was cutting a blank of walnut on my bandsaw and because of how dull the blade was it was not tracking straight I was moving the wood to try and keep the cut going as straight as possible. By doing that it placed a large amount of pressure on the left side of the blade right during the very last 1./8" of the cut the blade quickly went through that last little bit and sprung back hitting my left thumb leaving about a 1/2" long cut and plenty of sounding like a sailor. Thankfully I only needed a bandaid for this cut and not something worse. On a side note I was able to use dark humor to tell my family that I literarily bled to make their gifts this year...

Merry Christmas everyone!

Daniel
