Last week I asked a question about poly. I got LOTS of responses, but Joe Hemmerich sent me the most interesting. Here is what he said:

“Jim I'd never use Polyurethane as a finish on an item that will be used as much as a Dining Table. It is a layer of plastic over a layer of plastic and water will migrate through between layers. One coat is difficult to stick to the one below. It does not strip off it needs to be power sanded off....thus if a veneered table Poly is even a worse choice. You are looking perhaps into a finish that each coat will melt into the coat below. There are real nice varnishes out their that will work nicely. Catalized lacquers also will work. Look for moisture resistant. Head to barnes and Noble and pick up Understanding Wood Finishes by Bob Flexner...That is the only finishing book you'll ever need. I took 2 courses from him. Joe Hemmerich”

I ordered the book he recommended, actually Flexner has written several. This book is 310 pages, I have not read it cover to cover, but it looks good. I bought mine used on Amazon and the book is in great condition. (I am prejudice as I also sell used books on Amazon!).

I would recommend Joe’s comments and this book.
