John C. Lucas is scheduled to demo to our club on Saturday, May 3, 2014. John has been working with wood for about 35 years and started turning about 25 years ago.
John teaches a workshop each year at the Appalachian Center for Craft. He has been a demonstrator at several regional symposiums such as the TAW in Tennessee and the Desert Symposium in Phoenix. John has also demonstrated at several of the National AAW Symposiums. John has written articles for Woodturning, More Woodturning, American Woodturner, Woodturning Design, and Woodcraft.
You can often find his warm sense of humor and woodturning knowledge posted on many of the woodturning forums such as WoodCentral.com and woodturner.org.
He is known for his hand mirrors and one of a kind sculptural pieces. He is known to create work using a wide variety of techniques and many different materials. John is also actively interested in metal working and consequently makes or modify's many of his lathe tools.
The small group sessions will be held Friday and Sunday, May 2 and 4, 2014
Saturday, May 3, 2014 all day demo ... This demo will feature John's signature hand mirror. Other projects include offset pendants, turned business card holder and other items that are easy to turn yet will challenge the experienced turner.

This date has been worked around the University of Minnesota activities ... No conflict on parking. No reservations are needed for the Saturday session ... just show up.

The small group sessions will be limited to 8 attendees.
Both small group sessions will feature the hand mirror fabrication. Additional instruction will be off-center cuts,skew chisel techniques, square edge work, offset turning tool usage. To help out with the instruction, an experienced MWA club member will be available to spend time with the new turner.
Wood requirements are:
For the hands on classes I will need wood that is seasoned 2 pcs each 5 1/2" square
for the mirror body and 10" x 3/4" for the handle, The wood for both
should be the same. Something like maple, walnut, or reasonably good
cutting wood is fine.
