[Crw-talk] ash trees

Hi Folk,
Here is some food for thought. It is not meant to be criticism in any way.
This email is just to share some information.
I just learned at a seminar last night that the larvae of the Emerald Ash
Borer can survive at least two years in wood cut to fireplace size, even
when the wood is left outside. The reason we should not transport
larvae-infected Ash wood from one place to another is to slow the spread of
this devastating insect. You must burn, or at least "cook", all of the wood
to fully ensure the larvae are killed. Even if you spray the wood with
insecticide, some larvae are likely to survive. Sealing the ends of the
wood does nothing to harm the larvae.
Therefore, anyone who transports infested wood and the larvae it contains
may be directly responsible for killing Ash trees near the destination,
perhaps near their own home. It costs approximately $100 to $200 every one
to two years to treat a single Ash tree to prevent the Emerald Ash Borer
from killing the tree, and this treatment must be continued for as long as
the tree is to be kept alive, often for 20 years or more.
With these thoughts in mind, it does not seem like infested wood transported
from Goose Island or any location other than one's own back yard to their
woodshop is really free. Are you sure the wood is not infested with the
larvae? If you are not sure . . .

I guess my biggest thing for bringing it up was, even if they are on the
border of two states, we have many members who are in a different county
also. As far as going to Minn and taking it there, I am not for sure, I
guess I would look at the physical address of the trees, as an example if
you were going to be receiving a traffic ticket or a hunting violation, is
the warden or police from Minn or WI. You are physically in that state and
bringing it to another state. I guess they have to draw the line in the sand
somehow and somewhere.
This may be a good question to find on the DNR web site for both states and
copy and paste it.
( it might be cheaper solution )

That is a good point Jim except that now the quarantines line up between
Winona, Houston and LaX counties so it is legal to haul firewood between
these. I do not know about any other counties in WI since I work for MN.
Dormant season is the safest time to haul any wood (thinking of oak wilt,
Dutch Elm disease, blights etc). The absolute safest is to use up that wood
soon.
I plan to check with Spring Grove over here too when they begin a tree
removal project. There are some nice old maples and maybe some people could
get some.

Just thought I would mentioned and remind about hauling wood across the
state line and from County to County.
It can turn into an expenses load of wood very fast...
Thanks

An update to that message. Here's a photo of the ash pieces I got from
Pettibone this morning. That big one in the center was about all I could
manage to lift on to the tailgate.

Members:
I got a call from one of the city forestry crews, and they have begun taking
down trees on Pettibone Island. We are free to pick up some of the larger
pieces left by the lumber crews. I checked it out this morning. There is a
large 24-30" diameter trunk section and a few other chunks in a pile in the
parking lot across from the beach house. That's to the right just after you
cross the stone bridge coming into the park. You will need a chainsaw,
preferably a larger one, and maybe some help loading. This is heavy stuff. I
think there will be more where this came from if we show some interest in
picking up this material. It's free wood!
