A boy, his grandfather, and a bat. The story unfolds in pictures taken at an intergenerational class at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC. Taught by AAW members Barbara Crockett and Jim Burrowes, the class gave this young boy a chance to create a dream project and to spend time with his grandfather in a way neither will ever forget.

Inspired by the sun-kissed shorelines, gulf breezes, and sparkling waters of Tampa, Florida, the 2013 theme is "Currents." The theme is intentionally open to interpretation: participants are encouraged to interpret the theme for themselves, and to use any definition of "currents" for inspiration.

                              AAW Chapter in Taiwan

We are excited to share some images from our new AAW local chapter in Taipei, Taiwan. Mandy Chao sent us this link to the new chapter blog, http://blog.moc.gov.tw/blog/uniwood, on behalf of her father, Taiwan Association of Woodturners president, Joseph Chao. The blog is in Chinese, but the language of woodturning is truly global, as you can see from these images.

Applicants and their proposals are collected and judged by members of the Symposium Planning Committee, and then a list of proposed demonstrators is forwarded to the Board of Directors for their final selection.

                 AAW Newsletter
                              Vol.2 no.5
                              Dear James,

Mention the AAW and many will wholeheartedly agree that receiving American Woodturner is the primary benefit. But how many are aware of the full complement of benefits and services that come with a membership in the AAW? Just a partial listing illustrates the breadth of features, including the opportunity to apply for an Educational Opportunity Grant (up to $1,000 for individuals, and $1,500 for our local chapters and other organizations); receiving $1M in liability insurance while you are participating in official activities endorsed by the AAW and when participating in official local chapter business; online access to the entire portfolio, over 26 years, of American Woodturner and other educational materials; the ability to list your work for sale on the AAW website; and members-only access to the educational programming at our national symposiums, among many more benefits.

We deeply appreciate the efforts of our members to encourage other turners to join the AAW, and we hope that you will continue that support by referring others to our website for membership information.

The process for selecting the new AAW website developer is underway. The goal is to identify and enter into a contract with a highly qualified developer by mid-November, and to begin the design and development work in early January. Although the current website has served the AAW well for more than 10 years, our web presence is outdated, is inconsistent in appearance, and requires improvements in site architecture, technology, standards compliance, and responsive design. This is our opportunity to reengineer the site to better reflect the mission of the AAW and to introduce new features and new content for our members, including greater access to the robust collection of AAW intellectual property amassed over many years. When complete, the new website will have modern digital publications capabilities, including the ability to distribute and view digital versions among many popular mobile app formats.

                              Wig Stand Story

A member of the Waikato Guild of Woodworkers in New Zealand had a young friend who had to go through chemotherapy for leukemia and required a wig. Wigs are expensive and need care when not in use, so he made her a stand for it.

                              Pacemakers and woodturning
I was reading the article in the latest edition of American Woodturner about pacemakers and woodturning. I work in the power industry and have a pacemaker. As such, I work around generators that produce hundreds of megawatts of electrical energy and motors that are hundreds of horsepower. I am not an expert in this area and the electromagnetic energy given off by these devices concerned me when I first got my pacemaker. Therefore, I called the manufacturer to see if these large generators and motors would affect my pacemaker.
