Hi Folks,

Phil Miller is an active  member of the International Pen Turners Association, and he can suggest persons for the club demonstration.

When ordering a pen kit for the first time, remember to order the bushings.  With the bushings, it is very easy to turn the ends of each blank to the diameter that will give you a good fit with the metal parts of the pen.  You may also want a barrel trimming kit to square the ends of the blanks before you turn them.  This also makes for a better fit.

Jennifer and I have nearly all of the equipment needed, and some items not needed, to turn pens.  We also have many styles of pen kits and a few hundred blanks.  All of you who are receiving this email have an open invitation to come to our shop.  We will gladly share the little knowledge we have about pen turning, and I would bet Phil Miller would also be glad to instruct.     In my opinion, no one catalog has everything.  I like some things from this one or that one.  I do like some things at Penn State, some things at Craft Supplies, some things at Arizona Silhouette (currently changing owners and wouldn't suggest ordering until the change is complete) and some things at Berea Hardwoods. Also A-line has a good range of items from Craft Supplies.....support the local if you're able.

     

    I like;

     

    Adjustable mandrels 

     

    Mandrel Saver live centers (no point, the mandrel goes inside of the live center so there's limited stress on the mandrel).

     

    I like to turn acrylics and resins.  I do turn woods as well.  If it is wood, I prefer a CA finish.

     

    I like the micro meshes ( I say plural because there's standard and then there's also some specially made for resins and acrylics-both are great.)  

     

    I prefer kits with the best metals.  I sell pens, so saving a buck or two on pen hardware by buying the lower end metals, doesn't make much sense.  If selling, you want the best product.  Craft Supplies has a good resource in their catalogs about the different metals and their durability.

     

    As far as pen kits, personal preference.  I suggest picking one or two that you really like and start with that.  Maybe a one tube and a 2 tube style.  Ball points are a good starting point, or possibly one of the less expensive roller balls.

    I got a sudden urge to turn a pen and discovered I know absolutely less than nothing about it.  Looking through the catalogs, there is a confusing collection of toys you can get and designs etc.  For those of you who do it, what sources of supplies do you use?

     

    Perhaps we could have a meeting devoted to pen making.  Perhaps we had one recently and I missed it, always possible.
